Continuous professional development is defined as a process that helps an individual in maintaining his/ her professional life through the skills and knowledge that they have acquired over their lifetime. This test is usually accompanied by various learning activities both in and out of the learning centers. Continuous professional development has been applied in many professions such as teaching, medicine, and law. It has helped individuals to discover themselves and plan for a more realistic life. Continuous professional development is a key to being competent in life. My parents have mostly controlled my life and as such I felt the need to go through this process. It was also accompanied by the unfair treatment I received in school because of not being able to stand for myself.

Reasons for continuous professional development

Many reasons have been laid down by different organizations and individuals to show the importance of continuous professional development. The reasons may differ from one individual to another, but the aim is always the same. My reasons are pretty solid. First, the control my parents had over me when I was a child made me unable to make independent decisions. My parents chose for me everything that happened in my life.

My parents actions led to me being undecided on my purpose in school. When everybody was happy about school, I was not because I did not even know what I wanted to do in the school. When the teachers asked the students on what they would wish to be in the coming future, I was the only one left with no idea of what I dreamt of becoming. It also caused other students to mock and tease me. But with my professional career now, am ready to make own decisions that would help me grow my life, enjoy what my parents chose for me, pursue other new studies and remain competent in my professional development.

Background

The background of continuous professional development has been seen to really help individuals to be self- aware (Guskey, 200, 14). The fact that I was never aware of myself in the course of my studies is an important sign that I had to undergo this procedure. Continuous professional development is a learning process just like going to school to pursue a course in any field of study. The only difference is that continuous professional development is more work related as compared to other methods of learning (Institute of Hospitality, 2015, par. 1). Continuous professional development assumes that an individual has made life choices that are not interesting to him or her. For example, I wanted to pursue a different course from the one my parents chose for me but I could not because I did not wish them to think that I was disrespecting them. Therefore, the purpose of continuous professional development is to make these choices become attractive to an individual because after all, one cannot do away with them. I cannot throw away my MBA certificate because my parents chose the course for me.

For an individual to take a continuous development test, he/ she must be a professional or an individual who is on the job market or is planning to do the same (Institute of Hospitality, 2015, par. 2). This is because the continuous development process is only meant to help individuals who over their lifetime are not self- aware. This process cannot be done with high school kids or those in college because they are not still able to make wise independent decisions and as such must be helped by their parents or guardians. Even though continuous professional development is for those who want to remain competent in the market, those individuals who undergo the process do it as though they were still in colleges or universities. The only difference is that these individuals also do practical tests like going to offices and working. This process will therefore help me set up my business with the knowledge I have gained from the study of my MBA course.

Importance of continuous professional development

In a professional context, this process has brought a lot of significance for both employees and the organization as a whole. The most important thing is that it helps ones career to progress (Schostak, Davis, Hanson, et al., 2010, 8). Some people may not have intended to take the jobs that they have pursued maybe because of family or financial issues. This process would help them to develop their career to greater heights. This process also helps an individual during the appraisal process (Schostak, Davis, Hanson, et al., 2010, 8). Once a person is well aware of who he/ she is, motivation will be developed which will later lead to better work and desire for success. This process is very effective for organizations that would require their employees to work hard.

Teamwork test

Teamwork is an important aspect of continuous professional development. It shows the ability of an individual to work in a team of professionals and remain relevant, contribute to the team or be able to lead the team. It also shows the kind of characters that individuals possess when working in groups (Austin, Marini, Glover & Croteau, 2005, 1). The main goal of the test helped analyze my attitude, behavior and choices with regards towards team focus. This test was a success, and it opened my eyes to many things. This is partly because of my social nature in every place that I go.

First, it helped me to realize that my attitude was an advantage to me in team leading. Many leaders in the world today always have that attitude of not caring about others but only the purpose for which they are leading. This has made the people they lead to have negative attitudes towards them and as such has always resulted in poor leadership and collapse of companies all over the world. My attitude is thus important, and it shows that I have the ability to be a team leader. I can be able to listen to each and every member of a group and put their ideas into consideration. I can also be able to listen to grievances of team members. My relationship with my team members in case I was a leader would be perfect.

The second test that was done was in regards to behavior. In this test, the result was not very pleasing. It showed that I could not be able to make independent decisions as a leader. This was partly because I used to base each and every decision on my parents ideas. This one is not a good character for an individual who wants to be a team leader (Lessing & Witt, 2007, 3). As a member of the team, my behavior could only help me in contributing to ideas but not making a choice. In this perspective, it not bad though the purpose of the team member is to contribute ideas to the team.

On the part of choices, I failed miserably. The results showed that am not able to make independent decisions in a team. For example, when a question is asked, and everyone has to choose his/ her answer, I have to listen to what people say first, or I become the last one to choose. This is because I listen to what people say first and for me, majority rules. So I go with the most voted for choice. This test has opened my eyes to many things that I could not see in the past.

Johari window test

Another test that I underwent was the Johari window test. This test is also part of continuous professional development. This test was created in the 90s by Joseph Luft and Harry Ingram to aid in various phases of development (SelfAwareness, 2013, 1). It is a very advanced test and involves many practices that when completed give a person a new beginning. This test has helped me to change different aspects of my life. It is a mind test.

The first aspect of this test is aware of oneself (SelfAwareness, 2013, 1). This means that an individual can define who he/ she regards various factors such as character and the ones mentioned in the team work test. One thing to note here is that the Johari window test also covers team building and could share some thoughts as the team work test talked about above. I know am aware of myself because I can define myself and what I like and dislike. I know that I love fashion more than what my parents chose for me. I have even taken a course related to fashion so that I could prove that I know what I want. This was proven by the test. I was able to explain what I was interested in doing. I also explained that MBA was not my thing. The test help me to realize that I knew myself, but the problem was that I could be it. It also showed that I had dreams that I wanted to pursue, but I was of afraid of what my parents could say.

The second aspect of this test was focused on knowing my personal development (SelfAwareness, 2013, 1). Personal development is mainly focused on setting individual objectives and goals. The goals and objectives are set depending on the skills and knowledge that an individual has gained over time. This test has been useful to me. It showed that even after I had followed my parents to the latter during that time, I still had visions that I hoped to achieve. I was aware that I had a love for fashion and beauty and as such I had pursued a course on the same with the hope that one day I will be able to open a fashion and beauty parlor and eventually realize my dream. Also, with my MBA program, my objective is to start a big business in the future. This test has therefore helped me to know that I have visions and objectives that I have achieved.

The third aspect of the Johari window test involves the communication abilities of an individual (SelfAwareness, 2013, 1). My communication abilities in the past were basically poor. I could not be able to tell my parents of my thoughts and ideas. This is what led them to have that much control over my life. Also, when I was in class I could not give my ideas to the teacher because my parents had taught me to fear, respect and accept every idea and opinion that they offered or suggested. The communications abilities test has helped me to realize the importance of communication. It has showed me that it is because of previous poor communication abilities that made me do things that I was not planning for my life. The communication test has taught me to be vocal not only in social contracts but in formal settings such as jobs or schools. My communication skills are basically social which is helpful but it might not be right in the future when for example I would want to be a leader. The Johari window test has built a new confidence in me that will help me even when I decide to build my own business empire. It has also helped me in dealing with my parents.

The fourth aspect of this test was focused on relationships, both group and interpersonal (SelfAwareness, 2013, 1). Interpersonal relationship is an association that exists between two or more parties. It can therefore also be called a group relationship, the only difference being that interpersonal relationship could be both formal and informal. Group relationship on the other hand is the relationship between groups of people. It is mostly formal. Through this test, I have the ability to know the kind of group in which I fit. From the description of myself as a social person, I have realized that I fit best in social groups as compared to the formal groups. I can be able to be a leader in social groups but not in formal groups. This of course can apply in a work environment. This is because work settings always involve social contracts such as participating in team building. This test helped build my interpersonal relationship with individuals.
