Introduction

Chartered engineers are responsible for generating solutions to engineering issues through the application of new or existing technologies through creativity, innovation as well as the modification of the problems for complex systems that have significant levels of risk. Engineers can receive charters under Engineer Australia through an application, interviews, chartered for academics, and defense (Engineer Australia par 1).

Chartered Process

Charter accredited to engineers through application requires an individual to be a full member under the current membership. Furthermore, the individual should have completed and attained competency grade 2 ratings in the chartered self-assessment (Engineer Australia par 2). Additionally, the individual should be able to achieve the level of Functional in the Industry Review, which demonstrates the individual's competency for each of stage 2 competencies. From there, the individual will be required to submit the application fees and supporting documents for review.

Charters awarded through the interview requires an individual to have at least 15+ Years' Post Graduate Experience with essential roles, including leading projects and teams (Engineer Australia par 3). The individual is also required to have a grade of Full Member under the current membership. The individual is then required to submit the necessary documentation, such as curriculum vita, for review. Upon approval, the individual will be awarded a charter through an interview and receive practice through an official certificate (Engineer Australia par. 3).

Charters awarded through academics require an agreement between the individual's university and Engineers Australia. The individual is an engineering professional who is currently employed in a tertiary institution recognised by Engineers Australia (Engineer Australia par 4). However, the individual should be a member of Engineers Australia at the grade of Fellow or Member with at least 5years' experience (Engineer Australia par 4). To acquire this accreditation, the individual must submit a letter of support from the Dean of the institution as well as an academic portfolio that illustrates the career history, publication activities, teaching as well as previous research for review. Upon approval, the individual will receive accreditation (Engineer Australia par 4).

Charter accredited to engineers through defence requires the individual to be currently serving under the Australian Defence Force and, at the same time, be a member of Engineers Australia as a Full Member or above (Engineer Australia par 5). Additionally, the individual should have Navy Charge Qualification acquired in the last 15 years and, at the same time, have approval from the relevant Navy contact. This contact will provide an approved alternate pathway where the individual can make applications (Engineer Australia par 5). The individual is then requested to upload the necessary documentation such as a curriculum vita, copy of Identification Card, and a copy of the CPD log in within the CPD log file and a copy of charge documentation, among other documents. Upon approval, the individual will be awarded a chartered certificate (Engineer Australia par 5).

Benefits of Chartered Engineer Status

Becoming a chartered engineer is beneficial to the engineer as it helps engineers to prove their efficiency, value as well as build their capacities (Engineer Australia1 par 1). Charters facilitate an opportunity for engineers to truly advance their careers as it provides the opportunity for young engineers to continually improve their efficiency and, at the same time, differentiate themselves from other engineers (Engineer Australia1 par 1). Additionally, chartered engineers create a positive effect on corporations. Chartered engineers have more knowledge in specific areas due to the continuous professional development necessary to acquire the Charter status. As such, chartered engineers are considered to have stringer risk management, compliance, and quality processes due to their continuous development in their careers.

Becoming a chartered engineer is also beneficial as the credential is globally recognised (Engineer Australia1 par 2). As such, the engineer can attain better market value and gains significant recognition in the industry, community as well as the government since the accreditation illustrates professionalism and ability to perform the required tasks (Engineer Australia1 par 2). For the organisation, chartered status provides numerous positive outcomes. Chartered employees in the company offer a positive note as the company is assured that the chartered employees will demonstrate excellent risk-management processes and, at the same time, provide quality assured results when solving complex issues. As such, the organisation will be assured of more outstanding public relations and public safety while at the same time attracting and retaining talented individuals due to the chartered status.

Chartered status is beneficial to engineers. It differs from other credentials and clarifies a chartered engineer or organisation and a registered engineer or corporation (Engineer Australia1 par 3). Since other individuals already respect engineers, a chartered status elevates this respect. It creates a different perception of the engineer such that they become more confident in the engineer's ability to accomplish the necessary task compared to being a registered engineer.

Competency Claimed to be Proficient

The chartered status is awarded to professionals expected to attain the highest level of professional competence in the related field through practice and years of experience. An engineer is expected to complete Stage 1 and 2 Competency assessments to acquire a chartered status under Engineers Australia (Engineer Australia2 par 2). Stage 1 competency assessment is conducted when the engineer's qualification is not recognised or accredited by Engineers Australia. These may include individuals with engineering qualifications not recognised by Engineers Australia or oversees students who seek accreditation by Engineers Australia (Engineer Australia2 par 2). On the other hand, the Stage 2 competency assessments illustrate certification on personal engineering competencies that the engineer has mastered through continuous practice. The individual is required to demonstrate engineering capabilities in areas such as expertise, safety, quality, and leadership to achieve this competency.
