Johann Sebastian Bach was a German composer and also musician who lived in the Baroque period. He was known for being part of the team that came up with Brandenburg Concertos and even the Goldberg Variations that led to the development of St Mathew Passion music. Bach was born on 21 March 1685 in Eisenach, Germany and grew up to be a person who many know to have a passion and love for music. Bach was the youngest in their family where his father was called Johann Ambrosius Bach, and the mother was called Elisabeth Lammerhirt (Emery & Marshall, 2018). Ambrosius also had some talent when it came to music as he was part of the string players who were working in the town council and even in the ducal court located in Eisenach.
Bach began going to school in the year 1692, and he was able to perform well regardless of all the absences that he had and also obstacles that existed in his school. However, he did not pick anything substantial from the fact that his father was a string player. Bach went ahead to attend the Georgenkirche which was a place where Johann Christoph Bach was offering services as an organist in the year 1703 (Emery & Marshall, 2018). His parents died by the year 1685, and therefore the elder brother (Johann Christoph) took over his custody and made sure that he had a happy life. In that case, his brother was the noteworthy relative that many knew and also made sure that he got a taste of the success that he later had in the world of composition.
Bach's career began when he developed a passion for music, and that was what made him have a good reputation when focusing on the technical skills that he had already accrued. He started his career as an organist in New Church in Arnstadt, and that was the time when he began coming up with music that was religious. He was also a teacher of music in the church, but he did not associate well with the officials. They claimed that he was not rehearsing the students frequently and that was the reason why they showed poor performance during church services. Bach also worked as organizing in Muhlhausen at the court of the Duke of Wilhelm Ernst (Emery & Marshall, 2018). This was the time he wrote a number of his cantatas, and also some of his commonly known compositions came from this court.
Some of his compositions were Bach-Werke-Verzeichnis under which there were songs such as Kantaten, Motetten, and Passionen. There were also other compositions such as St. Matthew Passion, BWV 244, The Art of the Fugue, BVW 1080, Brandenburg Concertos, Mass in B Minor, Christmas Oratorio and God is My King.
Bach was devoted to his family after he got married in the year 1706 to his cousin Maria Barbara Bach. Together they managed to get about seven children, but unfortunately, some of them died while still infants (Miles, 1962). In the year 1720, Maria died while she was on her journey to Prince Leopold. Bach still had to married Anna Magdalena Wulcken, and together they had thirteen children. About half of the children died while young, but Bach managed to share the kind of love that he had for music with them. Bach died on 28 July 1750 in Leipzig, Germany while at the age of 65. His death was caused by a stroke, and he was buried at Old St. John's Cemetery in Leipzig.
