Introduction
Conflict in the workplace among nurses is a popular phenomenon in most environments globally. Even though workplace conflict is not categorized as a contemporary issue, it continues to pause as a challenge to most organizations. Individual aspects associated with conflicts in the workplace by nurses include poor family life, psychosomatic symptoms, and increased grievances incidents. The conflict poses serious potential threats to the financial and reputation status of an organization hence the need for competence by the nursing managers in conflict solving. Nursing unit managers play vital roles in conflict resolution such as identifying conflicts, educating, and training nurses on methods of solving conflicts among themselves, and engaging in open dialogues regarding conflicts to the nursing staff members.
Nurse Unit Managers
The nurse unit managers play an essential role in conflict management within an organization due to their strategic role in representing the first level management in an organization and their role in creating a connection between frontline nurses and a hospital’s strategic visions. The conflict resolution process varies according to the manager's work experience, age, and gender among other aspects such as personality. The nurse manager can serve the role of conflict resolution by minimizing escalating conflicts by conducting nurse training on how they should resolve conflicts between them as they arise. Effective communication regarding conflicts by the nurse managers is also an effective conflict regulation method
Decreasing Incivility
Several methods may be used to reduce conflicts within a workplace such as the incorporation of effective communication. Among the major causes of conflict within a workplace is lack of proper communication which in return confuses specific employee roles or objectives within the workplace. Effective communication may be enhanced through ensuring the delivery of information is clear, concise, and properly comprehended by the nursing staff. Effective communication in conflict resolution involves the direct addressing of the issue of conflict without avoidance. The nonpunitive communication regarding conflicts between a unit manager and the nurses develops reflective learning and trust among the nurses; hence eliminating aspects such as frustration which may easily cause conflicts.
A nursing manager may identify potential threats to conflicts arising and address these issues before their escalation. The process of identifying threats to a conflict involves the drafting and identification of procedures to gauge the potential to conflict. Policies and guidelines for effective practice are also essential in the prevention of pro-active conflict issues. The policies should be designed to communicate the goals and objectives within a workplace against violence and conflicts.
Conclusion
Moral distress within a workplace occurs when individuals within a workplace comprehend the morally upright measures to take regarding various actions but fail to take the actions due to powerlessness feelings. Moral distress may be reduced in the workplace through changes in the work environment. A focus on the work environment may reduce moral distress due to the system modification which accompanies the process, hence preventing future occasions of failure. Moral distress may also be regulated in a workplace by addressing the issues from a multi-disciplinary perspective. Moral distresses occur as a result of failure across various disciplines; a multi-disciplinary perspective ensures the adjustment of the overall facility.
