Introduction
As a new graduate, finding a new job becomes a hard task. Globally, there are many graduates leaving colleges each year which makes them compete for the few opportunities available. In Europe, economic recession go hand in hand with increase in young graduate unemployment. This article examines how the recent global recession, together with the general flexibilization of labour markets, is affecting young people. We examine different forms of social exclusion, including unemployment, temporary employment contracts and periods of inactivity, as well as the subjective insecurity arising from such labour market exclusion. We also examine what Member States have done to address this issue, especially as part of their response to the crisis.
Young Labour Market
At both EU (through the Europe 2020 strategy) and national levels specific policy measures exist that target young people in the labour market, but these are mostly supply-driven. Thus, they do not take into account the true problems young people are facing, including problems finding first-time employment and bad-quality jobs with little prospect of moving up the employment ladder. In conclusion, a new generation with higher exposure to systematic labour market risks than previous generations is being left to fend for itself with little appropriate state support.(Chung et al., 2012). The number is high based on the world population and fresh graduates look forward to filling these opportunities after leaving college. I would, therefore, try to gain an understanding of the professional sector I have trained for through personal assessment and research. Such understanding can be gained through engaging further learning and by registering with professional bodies related to my career.
Development
To develop leadership and analytical skills, I would prioritize in community building activities such as guidance and counseling, and civic education. Thereafter, research on the type of industries my profession is related to, highlight the down with their contact addresses.
Regular, invest part of my time in reading, and listening to great orators in the industry who have outstanding professional skills. Go out consulting from experienced people on the best things to include in my resume.
Based on the advice given by professionals, I then would draft a professional resume that covers the area of study and my strong skills related to my profession. Again, I would request people who I have worked with previously like during my attachments to be my references. Such will ensure that my resume is accurate and brief on who I am and what I have done to capture the employer’s attention. Later on, I would expand my network by uploading it in career searching sites such as LinkedIn.
Consequently, I would practice how to make good professional calls and reach out to areas I sent my resume requesting for interviews. Also, start on internship level or volunteering at any of the available corporates to sharpen my skills. Having graduated from college, I would invest part of my saving in getting extra professional outfits.
Conclusion
In conclusion, leaving college can be a confusing scenario while trying to get into a profession, such organized research and planning would help me manage time and opportunities that come along my way.
