The Bible begins by telling us that Jesus entered the temple of God. The temple of God was in Jerusalem. The temple was constructed following his command, and then it was devoted to his adoration. This is the place where the divine presence of God was. Jesus did not enter into the tower of David, which is the defense of Zion and the fortress of his father David, but rather the Son of man entered the house of his father as a king (Emanuel, 2016). He went into the temple to preach the good news to the people. In the temple, most prophecies were accomplished. The second part of the scripture says that he drove out people who bought and sold in the temple. It should be remembered that there were places where people could buy and sell goods in other areas like in the mount of the house. Even though what the people who were driven out of the temple were selling is not mentioned in this scripture, it is well recorded in the book of John 2:14.
In Exodus 30:17-21, we see a continuation of the explanation about the Jewish tradition that Mark was giving his gentile readers. The Mosaic Law requires that priests must wash their feet and hands before entering the tabernacle. However, in Mark 7:4, the Jewish religious leaders tend to twist the Mosaic Law, so it suits them, they claim that Jews should wash their hands before they eat so they cannot defile their food. Mark also tells them that they should not only wash their hands, but they should clean the utensils as well.
In the two verses that are in Mathew 21:12 as well as Mark 7:4, there are key insights, which are related to marketing. To begin with, the verse starts by pointing out that Jesus drove away, those who were buying and selling. This, therefore, tells us that the temple of God was turned to be a market place. We can see that there are people who are buying different commodities, maybe for domestic consumption, or perhaps they also want to go and sell. Therefore, the concept of marketing comes out clearly in this first part of this verse of Mathew. The same verse continues and points out that Jesus turned the tables of Moneychangers; this, therefore, shows that there were people who were doing currency exchange. It also points out in the last part that he overturned the benches of the people who were selling the doves, this also shows that there were people who were selling animals for money and there are those who were buying the animals, to go and use them in sacrifices or to sell as well. The act of Jesus driving people who were doing business in the temple out teaches people who do business even today that they should carry out their businesses in the right places.
The insights I have gleaned from the above bible verses have influenced my approach to marketing in the sense that, when doing marketing or when selling anything, do it in the right place and at the right time (Jacobsen, 2019). This will prevent you from getting trouble with the authorities. This was on the Sabbath Jesus went straight to the temple to go and preach he did not go to any market place. It is claimed that most of the things that were sold in the temple, including the lambs and the kids, were sold so they could be used in the Passover. However, this cannot be a substantial excuse for selling things in the house of the Lord, for everyone knew the time of the Passover. I had enough time to buy these things in the market places, which were all over. These, therefore, teach me that every place has its purpose, and everyone ought to do what is right at the right place in as much as buying and selling are concerned.
The last part of the verse in Mathew points out how Jesus overturned the tables of the moneychangers (Shimko and Baugh, 2019). Although it was in the custom, that, every Israelites was to pay half a shekel, which was to be used in the temple charge as well as in the service. This was to be paid by everyone who was 20 years and above, whether poor or rich. However, this could not be the reason why these people could go to exchange money in the temple because the public notice was given in good time that the time of paying half a shekel was close. This, therefore, meant that anyone who was obliged to pay the money was supposed to get his or her money ready. In Mark 7:4 the verse begins by pointing out that these people are coming from the market place and therefore, what it means is that they went either to buy or to sell; this, therefore, brings out the aspect of marketing. The two verses are talking about money exchange selling and purchasing and coming from the market. All these things are the ones that make up marketing.
