The topic is content moderation in computing today. The research question is; what is the importance of content moderation in computing today? The research hypothesizes that content moderation is crucial in computing today to protect the image and universal interests of people and organizations.
Previous research by Safiya Umoja Noble, Sarah Roberts, and Ramon Solorzano shapes the formation of my topic, question, and hypothesis of this research. Safiya Umoja Noble talks about how values are important in computing and should be promoted by moral agents in the industry. She talks about how computing is a diverse sector that supports politics, gender, race, and class, and anyone can contribute as long as they have the right skills and are neutral in their judgments and content. Her main research point is the keyword search on the internet. Search engines like Google are still biased on racial-based search results like the use of words like "black girls". It shows that search engines need neutrality and moderation. Sarah Roberts discusses commercial content moderation in computing organizations. It is a useful department in an organization producing online content to guard against discriminative, abusive or violent material. The individuals working in the commercial content moderation department should always be alert and need to make judgments and get approval from a moderator leading the group as they compare the content against universal moral values. It means they need to imagine themselves as the audience of the material. Ramon Solarzano talks about the struggles of Latin Americans as their content faces discrimination, and they often lack the freedom to express themselves. Latin content in North America is often treated as an option and is struggling to get to the mainstream despite the steady progress.
I will collect qualitative data for this research. The research does not require any numerical information but descriptive information as the topic is content moderation. Qualitative data is more in-depth and more detailed as it contains opinions, facts, and pieces from previous research. It allows open details, and the topic becomes accessible to diverse. It disqualifies pre-judgments and can be useful in the future together with qualitative data. The method for data collection is document review a branch of qualitative analysis. It analyzes previous research from journals and historical documents. It provides stability as information from these documents do not change or change slightly. It saves time, and it is cost-effective. It makes it easy to compare data from different sources.
Qualitative information makes it simple to create different themes making the analysis more in-depth. It allows the researcher to create patterns from the information creating more avenues for further research. Qualitative data is also in abundance on the internet and online and physical libraries.
The research informs business and policymaking as content moderation enables a business to protect its image and provide neutral services to all its clients regardless of their backgrounds. Policies are not only crucial for companies but to the government in regulatory authorities. Content moderation is essential given the rising cases of discriminative and violent content on the internet. It is also necessary for the workplace culture in computing as it allows the creation of moral values and policies to guide the production of content or products in computing organizations.
