Over the years, the number of young people using the internet has been on the increase. A study conducted by Ofcoms Media estimates that young people spend up to 27 hours weekly surfing the internet (Anderson, 2015). However, there has been a raging debate on the advantages of the internet on the lives of young people. While the internet can be used to conduct research for homework, term papers and socializing many people argue that the internet is slowly affecting the social skills of young people. This paper will discuss the advantages of young people using the internet.
With the help of internet, it is now possible to communicate with people from all parts of the world. Social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, my space and WhatsApp have become popular among young people. In fact, Anderson argues that. social media has also become popular among all age brackets (2015). This opens up their minds as they are able to interact with people from different parts of the world. They are able to share ideas and also appreciate diverse cultures. The internet also gives shy people a chance to communicate with other people.
With the touch of a button, young people can now have access to unlimited amount of knowledge. Young people use the internet to help them study. In fact, most institutions of higher learning have subscribed to online libraries. Young people are also using the internet to search for topics which they may not be comfortable asking their parents, teachers and their peers (Anderson, 2015). Most parents nowadays are shying away from discussing topics about sex. On the other hand, most curriculums fail to cover this crucial topic.
However, on the hand, scientists and psychologists alike argue that the internet is denying young people social skills. They also argue that the more young people spend time on the internet, the more likely to put their health at risk. This is due to un proper sitting positions and poor eating habits. However, research shows that young people spend an average of 27 hours a week surfing the internet (Anderson, 2015). Therefore, the notion that the internet is denying young people social skills is misplaced. Research shows that most young people access the internet using their mobile phones and this does not affect their health.
Internet use should be encouraged among the young people. Among other things, young people can use the internet to study and also communicate with their peers. However, young people should avoid spending too much time on the internet.
