Nursing as a career and profession belongs to the healthcare sector that is aimed at caring for persons, their families as well and communities with the ultimate goal of attaining, maintaining, and recovering optimal health & quality of life. For instance, in this case, a nurse can be differentiated from any other healthcare provider through education, training, the scope of practice, and how he or she approaches patient care. Different specialties do exist within which nurses can be categorized based on various prescription authorities. The traditional role that enables nurses to provide care as physicians is the one that, over the years, developed the public perspective of nurses as care providers (Barnet, 2020).
For integrity as well as competence, the current world’s nurses are required to have various crucial elements that would give guidance to their profession; these include, accreditation, the education process, a system for certification & licensure, as well as a relevant code of ethics ("The Nursing Code of Ethics: Its Value, Its History", 2020). For this reason and others, the American Association of Nurses (ANA) came into place to support and guide the nursing practice by creating and implementing the Code of Ethics for Nurses that is accepted nationally and that which has Interpretive statements ("The Nursing Code of Ethics: Its Value, Its History", 2020). Thus, the Code of Ethics is a crucial document that enables nurses to use it as a guide through negotiations of complex problems that are inherent to multiple situations. The situations, in this case, are those that arise within the nursing profession that require both decision-making and action, including ethical dilemmas. These situations include fatigue, use of technology, end-of-life care, delegation, and errors & near misses, all of which can be managed through the Code of Ethics guidance and thus leading to safer as well as compassionate quality of care ("The Nursing Code of Ethics: Its Value, Its History", 2020). However, the Code of Ethics is not the only document or guide that nurses must adhere to in resolving ethical problems and issues that are complex but also other resources are available to deal with the broad scope of such matters ("The Nursing Code of Ethics: Its Value, Its History", 2020).
Like any other profession, many complex factors do influence motivation. These include professional, social, as well as economic factors (Dzaher, 2020). Therefore, there are various reasons as to why a nurse can be motivated to remain committed to their job. In this case, particularly, the best motivation & job satisfaction for me as a nurse comes from the belief that I am competent to what I do and that the performance is excellent. Therefore, in my perspective, I have a passion for this profession regardless of the negativity that comes with it; also, the increased demand for nurses pushes me towards remaining motivated and hard working. Moreover, during my studies, I realized that multiple opportunities in this profession have always pushed me towards going further into the exploration of my career (Dzaher, 2020).
As a professional and registered nurse, I have gone through a series of experiences. Through my story, I had a passion for this career, which is the major driving element that helps me keep in mind the care for patients first before anything else. This is so even in the International Council of Nurses which states that one of the elements encompassed in nursing has to do with the collaborative & autonomous care of persons through all age groups, families as well as communities, whether sick or well and that it should be in all different settings. Thus, like any other nurse, passion is a critical motivational element. Also, I had the desire to pursue this profession as it has a wide range of specializations to choose from, as this was also and still is part of my motivation in everyday routine (Dzaher, 2020).
Similar to any other nurse in any institution, there are short-term as well as long-term goals that need to be kept in mind ("Nurse Keith: Your Nursing Career, The Long and Short Term", 2020). Short-term goals that I particularly consider include graduation and pursuing the next step that is a job or the next degree program ("Nurse Keith: Your Nursing Career, The Long and Short Term", 2020). On the other hand, long-term goals should have to do with the direction I am heading and what I intend to achieve as a professional registered nurse ("Nurse Keith: Your Nursing Career, The Long and Short Term", 2020). For instance, in the short term as BSN, this will encompass hard work, success in clinical rotations as well as crushing the academic side. The short-term goal for me is to finish my studies with flying colors, excelling in the NCLEX as per the very first attempt, then obviously find a good job which is well-paid at any health facility that will otherwise help me gain the best experience relevant to my career. Thus, the short-term goals mentioned above as per the BSN degree are crucial towards moving to the next step, which is the mid-term, then finally to the long-term goals ("Nurse Keith: Your Nursing Career, The Long and Short Term", 2020).
The long-term goals come beyond the certification in critical care as well as the achievement of a high level of expertise in the clinical sector, where now I can think outside the box and make future long-term goals. This will encompass professional as well as mastery satisfaction based on what was achieved in the BSN degree, and thus, this explains the essence of the BSN degree. Putting in mind the constant and frequent changes in the healthcare landscape, which illustrates the prudential nature of marketability as well as professionalism and so the need for their elevation. Thus, as a nurse aimed at critical care, I have to gain that experience as well as confidence, which comes particularly after enrolling the master's degree as it provides more opportunities ("Nurse Keith: Your Nursing Career, The Long and Short Term", 2020).
Therefore, reflecting on my journey as a registered nurse, I have been assessing my desires regularly to stay up to date with any new trends in the profession and also develop a love for patient care. Through this, my philosophy is to take into account all these in the accomplishment of all patient needs through my own leadership skills as a nurse. This comes with its progression through nurturing of other nurses by equipping them with expertise as well as mastery, and thus passion & motivation ("Nurse Keith: Your Nursing Career, The Long and Short Term", 2020).
