Chlamydia is a sexually transmitted disease. It affects both men and women and can have permanent damage to the reproductive system of women. The bacterial infection can make it impossible or difficult to conceive later on if left untreated. It can fatally cause ectopic pregnancy in women. Chlamydia affects the cervix, rectum, and the urethra. It is possible to live with Chlamydia because it may not have symptoms in certain people. However, the possible symptoms in women are painful intercourse, vaginal discharge, burning with urination and swelling in the vagina. In men, the symptoms may be penile discharge, swelling of the testicles and pain or burning sensation during urination. Chlamydia is prevalent in sexually active young people between the ages of 15-25 (Chlamydiacoalition.org, 2018). Therefore, there is need to create awareness through Chlamydia campaigns as advocated by the NCC.

The National Chlamydia Coalition (NCC) was founded in 2008 with the aim of addressing the heavy burden of Chlamydia in young adults and adolescents. The organization carries out campaigns aimed at promoting equal access to quality and comprehensive health services. According to the organization, sexually active persons should be tested because the infection is prevalent and has no symptoms. Furthermore, the CDC recommends that sexually active females from the age of 25 and below should be checked once a year and mainly for those with multiple sex partners. Pregnant mothers should also be tested as well. Therefore, the NCC advises men and women to talk to their healthcare providers for sexually transmitted infections or Chlamydia tests. Thus, the organization encourages the public to be open about their sex life and provide honest discussions with their healthcare provider (Chlamydiacoalition.org, 2018).

The NCC partners with healthcare professionals, national nonprofit organizations, health insurers, advocacy groups, and the federal, state, and local government representatives. The NCC offers research services on how to handle Chlamydia treatment and diagnostic. The organization also creates public awareness campaigns as per the request of the client group, for example, the government representative. Most importantly, the NCC offers clinical education, resources, quality measures and practice skills to healthcare professionals in efforts to manage Chlamydia outbreak. Apart from that, the National Chlamydia Coalition in collaboration with the American Sexual Health Association holds conventions on ways of improving the Chlamydia screening rates by engaging patients, providers, and payers (Chlamydiacoalition.org, 2018).

Impact of the NCC Campaigns

The NCC campaigns on Chlamydia have a positive impact on the sexual well-being of individuals. Firstly, the campaigns stipulate that there is a treatment for Chlamydia for people to avoid panic if diagnosed with the infection. Secondly, the NCC also specifies that the bacterial infection can cause serious health complications if untreated in both men and women. If untreated in women, the disease can cause Pelvic Inflammatory disease (PID), a condition that leads to infertility because it affects the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and the uterus. It can also cause cystitis and mucopurulent cervicitis. On the other hand, untreated Chlamydia causes prostatitis, infertility, and epididymitis in men. Therefore, by spreading the risks of Chlamydia, individuals are encouraged to practice safe sex practices such as using protection to reduce the threat of sexually transmitted infections (Chlamydiacoalition.org, 2018).

In conclusion, Chlamydia is a treatable STI. The disease is contagious and is transmitted through vaginal and anal sex. In most cases, the disease does not show symptoms. Through the NCC campaigns, individuals are advised to seek Chlamydia screening together with their partners to save their sexual well-being. As a result, the NCC campaigns have been useful in disseminating information about the causes, symptoms, diagnostic and treatment solutions for Chlamydia.
