However, the researchers experience different challenges in their study, including the facilitation of manual sign language in the development of vocal responding. Nevertheless, such challenges can only be evident in children that have already developed a modest vocal imitation repertoire. Such children may fail to develop similar effects compared to those who fail to emit different vocal responses. The researchers considered how important it could be to conduct additional procedures while combining the teaching of manual sign language. It may be necessary to ensure there is effective facilitation of the vocal response in such procedures.
A key strength of the research is the way researchers managed to use prompt-delay procedures. Such procedures were essential, especially when combining alternative forms of communication with mand training. The researchers demonstrated how increasing vocal verbal behavior repertoires could be used in different children experiencing developmental disabilities. The researchers used an example of Tincani on how she found a differentially higher percentage of vocal responses (Carbone et al., 2010). The researchers used Tincani's work in identifying how mand training can be used in the picture exchange communication system (PECS) compared to when the same approach is used immediately after the exchange of the picture symbol.
Conclusion
It was interesting how the first article suggested effectiveness in creating an echoic repertoire, especially for nonverbal children with autism. The researchers suggested that manding needs be used as the starting point while training children with limited repertoires. The second article verified the effectiveness of different treatment methods for all participants. The treatment method used by researchers in the second article describes several vocal responses that can be used in accompanying the manual sign minds.
