Author’s connection with nature

The first thing I noticed when reading ‘Writing in October’ is the author’s connection with nature. The descriptive writing paints a vivid picture of the picturesque environment that the author is writing about. I could feel the snow falling despite it not snowing, the biting cold and the freshness of the air are all attributes that come alive as you engage with the text. The author also makes a deliberate attempt to create a connection between the reader and the text by achieving a detailed description of what he is feeling and how his feelings are associated with the weather (Bass, 2008).

As you read the text, you tend to encapsulate a feeling of seasonality where emotion driven reminiscence is attributed to the transformation of one season to the next. I also found that the writings of the author were quite rhetorical in the sense that the descriptions given of nature were almost as metaphors for life experiences. One gets the notion of the transition from life to death and life again as the weather changes from autumn to winter and to summer and the cycle continues. The mention of plant life frozen under ice that will later renew and shine brightly is an indication of the cycle of life (Bass, 2008).

Consequently, the theme that the author advances is that seasonal snow inserts the earth bed into a long sled after experiencing annual precipitation. The author, therefore, communicates a key concept that is the earth is a preservative where plant life is renewed with the renewal of seasons. Reading through the text makes me appreciate the wonders of the world and the miracles that the weather brings about to the extent that I develop a desire to want to witness it unfold (Bass, 2008).
