The world today has become a global village where mass communication plays a central role in the dissemination of messages to a large audience (Coffey et al., 2013). The mass media is the channel that permits the transmission of messages to the desired audience. Mass media has always been used to communicate events of both national and international significance, such as the revolution in Egypt. This paper presents a case in which social media facilitated interaction during the global events of the coronavirus pandemic.
Social media has facilitated the exchange of essential information regarding the global Covid-19 pandemic (Merchant & Lurie, 2020). For instance, the amount of information about the virus, such as its cause, spread, and control measures, has been disseminated to a vast global audience facilitated by social media (Cinelli et al., 2020). Most fundamentally, social media has enhanced the spread of updated information about the virus so that a news piece read one day could be outdated the next morning.
Through social media, some essential pieces of information, such as the importance of avoiding stigma on the affected individuals, have also been overemphasized (Merchant & Lurie, 2020). Countries across the globe are also able to take appropriate measures to deal with the pandemic based on the information obtained from other adversely affected countries (Cinelli et al., 2020). Such pieces of information, such as the number of deaths cases, and recoveries, are made available through social media interactions.
Even though social media has always been blamed for misinformation and the spread of conspiring information, its positive role in spreading essential information on the global coronavirus pandemic has remained immense (Cinelli et al., 2020). The spread of information on Coronavirus precautionary measures such as thorough handwashing, sanitizing, and maintaining social distance has been facilitated significantly by social media (Merchant & Lurie, 2020). Conclusively, social media plays an essential role in the interaction of events of national and international significance.
