The term knowledge worker was coined by Peter Drucker, a management consultant in his book The Landmarks of Tomorrow (1959) (Drucker, 1959). Drucker defined a knowledge worker as a worker who would apply the theoretical and analytical knowledge acquired during training in developing products and services (Drucker, 1959). He predicted information to be critical to workers such that instead of generating value through physical labor using body muscles, they do it with minds. Knowledge work is all about problem-solving, which requires both convergent and divergent thinking in answering simple and complex matters that arise daily in the work environment (Kianto et al., 2019).
Nursing Informatics
Nursing informatics is a specialty in nursing with multiple information and analytical sciences to help identity, define, manage, and communicate data, information, wisdom, and knowledge in the nursing profession (Collins et al., 2017). Nursing, similar to other professional fields, has witnessed rapid changes in technology. Information systems enable limitless learning and exploration, connections and making the world to be a village. The widening range of technology allows nurses to research and reform unproven clinical practices to evidence-based practice. Nursing informatics includes nursing science, computer science, information science, and cognitive science (Collins et al., 2017). They all help manage, disseminate, and enhance healthcare data, information, technology, and wisdom to advance the profession and provide high-quality patient care.
Major Trends Forcing Nurses to Adopt Technology
There are three major trends in the nursing field;
The Move to Evidence-based Decision-Making
The nurses are under pressure to make sound and evidence-based choices in preventing patients' complications (Shujahat et al., 2019). They now face a lot of data and need to select the right data for the issue.
The Adoption of Electronic Medical Records (EMR)
Nurses are forced to be familiar with EMRs technology to easy access records. There is an evolution of record-keeping with the widespread use of EMRs.
The Expansion of Enterprise-wide Systems.
A real-time capacity management system is frequently used in the nursing field. The system gives nurses better control over the physical environment, such as tracking patients, doctors, hospital staff, locating empty beds, and ordering transporters, among other things (Shujahat et al., 2019).
Role of a Nurse Leader as a Knowledge Worker
- Gathering data
- Analyzing and using available information
- Using knowledge to make decisions
