Introduction
The film “From Mambo to Hip Hop” is a South Bronx tale documentary that presents South Bronx's life and the adoption of Cuban rhythms that led to the emergence of the salsa sound. Later, it shows how hip-hop rose from the desperation that people had after the fires that destroyed the neighborhood. This paper will examine how the film portrays the Bronx, the significance of hip-hop, and the connection between Hip hop and mambo.
Discuss at least three ways the film portrays the Bronx.
Birthplace of mambo dance and hip hop. It all started with stickball, where the whole neighborhood in the South Blocks would go out to play. After the games, they all went to hang out in the Cadiz store, which had a jukebox that motivated them to start the mambo dancing. Some of the best young musicians were invited to PS 52, where they were given a chance to study and rehearse their dancing skills. After the auditorium rehearsals, they were allowed to perform in the gym downstairs on Fridays before boxing games. This marked the official beginning of Mambo dancing.
The film portrays the Bronx as a harbor for musicians. The commentator says that there were so many musicians living in the Bronx during the error of mambo dancing. These musicians, especially those who were young and upcoming, wore uniforms to perform their music. Their decency and continuous seeing, hearing, and listening to their work made them admired by the majority in the neighborhood; hence, most people were stimulated to play music and practice to be like the musicians. This led to a new crop of many mambo and hip-hop musicians in the Bronx.
The film portrays the Bronx as the custodian of the mambo and hip-hop culture. The Bronx was always full of loud music and drums emanating through their projects' "canyons." Therefore, this culture was evident; hence there was no way to escape from it. The hip culture was so infectious that no matter where one came from, one wanted to get up to speed with it. These newcomers in the Bronx started talking differently, dressing differently, and walking differently. For example, an immigrant from outside New York was easily influenced by the "Machito band," and after six months, the or she could be seen talking, walking, dressing, and bumping their head like the natives of the Bronx. Also, salsa was a Cuban music piece that adopted the New York attitude by incorporating the Bronx hip culture.
What is the significance of Hip Hop, according to the film?
The rise of Hip Hop was significant for the Bronx. It brought the communities that were divided together. People could meet together in the abandoned buildings, which served as the people's second home. It was considered a revolution.
What is the connection between Hip Hop and Mambo?
Mambo dance was the foundation of Hip Hop dance. Initially, mambo dance started as a form of expression as people of the South Blocks in New York tried to overcome different forms of oppression they were going through. They came together to enjoy and forget their challenges by expressing themselves through Mambo dance. However, over time, the integration of cultures and a new crop of musicians led to the transition of mambo dance into hip-hop. Hip hop was mainly aimed at outclassing, outdoing, and dancing your opponent to make them look weak. Therefore, it involved better moves and passionate dancing, which helped the dancers to express themselves even better.
