Additionally, my goal of studying in Turkey is to have a better understanding of the world and be able to overcome the challenges of living in a different country. I have done enough research on the culture, customs, and people to familiarize myself with the state in preparation for studying abroad. I also inquired about the cost of studying in the country to set aside enough funds for tuition and upkeep. Other arrangements for studying in Turkey include acquiring a visa, a plane ticket, visiting a travel doctor, and obtaining a travel license.

Adapting to a new environment is a significant challenge that I expect to experience while in Turkey. The way of life in Turkey is quite different from that in the US. For instance, while in the US, people can call others with their first names, in Turkey, people have to be addressed with their status. Although adapting to such cultures is quite challenging, the best way to address the problem is to interact more with locals to learn the fundamental elements of the culture. Additionally, being separated from my old high school friends and having to attend school in a foreign place prompted lonesomeness, but such feelings of loneliness can be overcome by staying focused and making new friends as my peers are often ready to mingle and interact.

However, acquiring new friends while in Turkey can be quite problematic. Some of the strategies I use to gain friends include holding parties and attending group discussions, which are common socialization platforms for many students. However, in the case where my strategies do not work, I have to get more social and identify a few students I can frequently converse with during and after classes. Acquiring a few friends would be the starting point of getting to know and interact with more students. Also, Turkish people value invitations to tea dinners. Asking one or two classmates out for a cup of tea is a social strategy that would create a bond and allow friendship to grow. Further, just like in any other country, learning and mastering the names of potential friends in Turkey would be vital to getting to know new classmates. Introducing myself and knowing the names of a few, if not all, of my classmates, would make it more comfortable meeting and speaking with them. Finally, based on my background research, Turkish youth are very welcoming, and proud of their culture, but also curious about other cultures. Therefore, it would only take showing interest to interact, inquiring about their culture, being complimentary of their country, and sharing about my home country to bond with the local students.
