Religion is one of the most interesting topics since it contains fascinating facts and information. People in the world have different faiths and they believe in various creatures who they worship in unique ways. Some of the religious practices performed by people of different faiths include feasts, festivals, prayer, music, and initiations among others. Moreover, there are sacred narratives and histories that are preserved in sacred scriptures, symbols, and sacred places that are meant to give meaning to life. Beliefs, religious organizations, and emotions make up the crucial elements of religion. In this essay, I have gathered a list of the most important texts on religion.
Religion, Power, Politics
The author, Konrad Raiser, argues about the relationship between religion and politics. Raiser explains that nowadays, in many countries, religious traditions are associated with national political parties, some of which may be ethnic (Raiser 2). The political leaders aim at transforming identity politics to seem legitimate by using religion. The author argues that the involvement of politicians in religion is one of the primary causes of conflict in the past few decades. Raiser's argument is effective since religion has been proven to be a problematic factor in the political world, and there is a need to cease the former's involvement in political processes.
Religion, Mortality, and Abortion
In his article, Tom Clark, explains that in our current society, matters regarding abortion are significant issues of concern in religion. Many religious organizations have been striving to reach an agreement regarding whether abortion should be legalized to control population growth (Clark 683). Many countries are adopting policies that allow legal abortion, but people still practice illegal abortions despite the call by Catholic believers to illegalize the vice. The author's argument is that a child is a gift from God, and abortion means taking away a human life. The article supports my argument in that I believe abortion is illegal.
Religion and Morality. Are Religious People Nice?
Phillip Morgan, in his article, tries to examine if religious people seem friendlier than the rest. He explains that the Bible has some violent narrations. However, he cites that, in his view, in the current world religious norms and beliefs should have insignificant influence on attitude and behavior. On a different view, Morgan explains that morality and religion are intertwined, where religious people have certain moral attitudes. The author's argument is effective, and, in my belief, religious people should be moral.
Religion and The Rise of Capitalism
R.H. Tawney, in his book Religion and the Rise of Capitalism, explains how religion has affected economic and social practices today. His research is based on the capitalist economy in the Middle Ages and thus explains how Christianity plays a significant role in the marketplace (Morgan 146). From his research, it is evident that there is a shift in the line that divided the spheres of religion and secular businesses in the past. The author's argument is effective he has examined the trends from medieval to modern theories.
Religion and Spirituality
The authors of the book explain various case studies that mostly focus on immigrants and the influence of religion on these people. Most of the reading assesses the involvement of immigrants in political, civil, and religious actions. These immigrants often use their religious beliefs to assist them as they adapt to the United States' environment (Kadar, Scott, Hipp, Belavich, Butler, Rye, & Zinnbauer 30) The argument is effective and useful to my research since it supports my belief that people use religion as a means of comfort.
