Introduction

The name Jesus was a common earthly name during the first century. It was common among the Jews and is still presently used. However, the name was used to refer to the son of God, Jesus Christ, who was born by Mary through conception by the holy spirit. The angel informed Mary that her son would be named Jesus and that he was the son of the highest. After Jesus, the son of God, was born, it was wrong for anyone to mention the name in vain. The son of God was given an earthly name to symbolize humanity in him as He came to fulfill his mission on earth. Despite being the son of God, he participated in normal human activities, just like other people. He forsook all privileges and expressed gentleness as he dwelt among people. Both the Greeks and the Jews had a special meaning of the name Jesus with regard to the work that Jesus came to do.

The name Jesus resulted from the Hebrew name Yeshua which means to rescue or to deliver (Lutz, 2010). In the old testament, the name was Joshua. This means that the Hebrews identified the son of God as the savior. On the other hand, the Greeks associated the name Jesus with the healer. They saw Him as a doctor who could heal the body, soul, and spirit as well as guide sinners to repentance. Therefore, the name Jesus wholesomely expresses the work which He came to do on earth and that which only Him as the son of God could realize.

Significance of the Name Jesus

The name Jesus is very important because of who it characterizes. It is a name given to the son of God who came to earth in the form of a human to die for human sins. He was a savior, just as the angel said to Mary. The name Jesus signifies humility (Lutz, 2010). This is because it was a common name among the people, yet He humbly used the name and did everything just like everyone else. His humility is further expressed by how he interacted with people and carried out His activities with the mission of saving mankind from sin. His selfless humility stands out through his obedience all through to the time of his death on the cross. Through Jesus, God gave human beings salvation and eternal life.

Also, the name Jesus is important as it signifies God's love and passion through His son Jesus Christ (Lutz, 2010). The bible states that due to God's intense love for human beings, He resulted in giving his only son in order to save mankind. Through this, it is evident that God's love was presented to the people through Jesus Christ. Jesus was a representation of God's extreme love for human beings. Through the name Jesus, people were saved, delivered, healed, and rescued. In addition, the name Jesus is significant because it symbolized the power given to him in heaven and on earth.

His name revealed how powerful he was. It was a symbol of the utmost authority. Through the name of Jesus Christ, human beings are able to give their prayers and petitions to God the father. The name Jesus was also very significant as it represented the son of God, who was anointed and chosen to be the savior of mankind. Through this, he was able to live among the people saving them from distress and preparing them for eternal life that came after death for a believer. The name Jesus is the name of endless exaltation; therefore, He is very glorified. The name is also important because people get to God through His son Jesus.

Symbol of Identity

The name Jesus is also a symbol of his identity and mission (Lutz, 2010). He came to earth in the form of humans in order to fulfill God's wish. Jesus Christ reveals his connection to God, the father, by being the savior and messiah. Furthermore, his name is significant as it fulfills the old testament prophecies of the coming messiah. The prophecies talked about a messiah who would come to do great things, and all the prophesies are fulfilled by the coming of Jesus Christ. Jesus is portrayed as the mediator between God and man. Through him, God was able to deliver mankind from sins, and he helped create a link between mankind and God through prayer.

Moreover, the name Jesus was very significant to the Greeks. They associated the name with aisthai, which means to heal. The Greeks were right about Jesus being a healer. This is evident in all the scenes where he healed the sick people, he resurrected the dead, he made the blind to see, made the lame to walk, and he forgave sinners. Through these activities, Jesus fulfilled the healing mission. He had power over all forms of sickness. All the people that believed in him got healed. Also, the Greeks were right to associate Jesus with healer since he was the messiah meaning the anointed one. However, the Jews did not agree with this because Jesus did not fit in their description of the messiah. He was really the messiah because he was from David’s lineage, and his reign brought peace and prosperity. Jesus is the messiah, saved, and redeemed the people from challenges and showered them with peace and harmony.

The Greeks were also right about Jesus being the iasthai since all through his mission; he anticipated to take away suffering from the people. It is recorded in the new testament that he healed all that believed in him without bias of where the person came from. He also preached the gospel of repentance and faith wherever he went in order to deliver people from sins (Lutz, 2010). As a healer, he was passionate about his mission, and he fully understood the people even when they went against him. Being the healer, his power is evident as he cast out demons, heals all types of diseases, satisfies spiritual yearning through the gospel, and forgives sins. His mission from the beginning is characterized by gracious acts of service to the people that resulted in peace and salvation. His preaching also revealed his healing aspects as he used parables to offer lessons of salvation to the people that resulted in spiritual healing. Whenever he gave a parable, he made sure it had taught to the people and also a resultant impact on transforming the people’s lives.

Evidently, the Greeks identified the significance of the mission of Jesus, and that is why they associated him with the word healer. They were very right since all through Jesus' mission, he healed people’s soul diseases and patiently bore the burdens he encountered on earth till he died on the cross for mankind. All through his earthly times, he made things right for the people and assured them of eternal life for all those who believe in him.

Conclusion

As discussed above in the essay, the name of Jesus signified the fulfillment of old testament prophesies. It also expressed God's utmost love to the people as he gave his son Jesus to die for people’s sons. Through the name of Jesus, people are saved, redeemed, and rescued. It is also through his powerful name that people talk to God through prayer. His name has further evidenced his power because exploits can be done by the mention of his name.
