I hope you are doing well, and I would like to start off by letting you know that I am so proud of you being my granddaughter and every step you take towards becoming an empowered woman in the society. It is also important to let you know that the community in which I grew up in and point out the different struggles and roles that women have always taken in the society since the 1960s. In the 1960s, work revolved around men supporting women and children as part of their primary job. In this case, there was a significant difference between the roles of women and men in the community. Women were mostly housewives who were left at home to take care of the children and mainly they were involved in house based chores. Your grandfather had to support us until when I lost him to cancer and had to look for casual jobs in industries that were not paying equal salaries to what men were getting (861).

The difference in wages was a significant barrier towards women development and also attaining the same status between women and men in the society. In this case, life had to continue with me supporting my family using the little resources that I was able to gather while working in the industries that could allow me to work for them. With the revolutions in the industrial sector, I managed to secure a job as tea lady for the mine workers (862).

It was until the 1970s that women started to become vocal and fight for equal rights as those of men in employment, political opportunities as well as social recognition. Women were encouraged in the 1960s to pursue education and careers that could provide them a competitive chance to work in organizations. I was lucky enough to have saved some money from my tea business which enabled me to pursue a certificate in office administration. Later on in the 1970's, using the office administration certificate, I was able to secure a job as the secretary with a mining corporation. I must let you know that with the changes in technology that had led to the initiation of more technical based opportunities women got an opportunity to work in factories doing work that did not require a lot of strength. The industrial revolution after the major world wars also helped women to assume the roles of their husbands while they were away fighting for the nation. Women had to ensure the families remained fed and the role played by women sustained the economy of the country (863).

Having raised your mother as a hardworking woman, she managed to get some skills through her college education and thus, she secured a job as a business consultant in the 1990's. I am proud of my daughter for being a mother to a beautiful young lady like you, and I look forward to congratulating you for more accomplishments in the future. With the complexity in the current technological fields, I would like to encourage you to partake a technology-based career which will increase your chances of leading a better life.

Sincerely,

Hellen Bradley
