Regular moderate or intense physical activities, offer many health benefits for children, including reduced risk of chronic diseases, improved mental and social health, and maintaining healthy body weight. Besides, physical activities carried out in the community playground with peers enable the children to improve their cognitive, physical, emotional, and social skills. Although there are many unstructured physical activities like cycling, walking, and playing in the yard associated with children, non can replace the benefits offered by playgrounds. Besides, outdoor yards and neighborhood environment does not offer any facilities to facilitate physical activities for children with disabilities. Public playgrounds are thus beneficial because they provide recreational spaces for children to interact and play. Additionally, facilities to assist children with disabilities are installed in playgrounds, and thus such children get the chance to have some physical activities. The community should provide more high-quality playgrounds that cater to both normal and children with disabilities because they enhance physical activities that keep their bodies healthy and promote cognitive, emotional, and social development.
By making this argument, I hope to enlighten the community on the importance of providing more playgrounds for children and ensuring that facilities to assist those with disabilities are installed. Besides, I hope to make the audience aware of the risks posed by the lack of playgrounds to children, adults, and the community.
The target audience for this argument is the community members who should come together and ensure that their children have enough playgrounds to enhance physical activities. Also, I target the community members who could provide land for the construction of playgrounds proximity to reduce the distances traveled for kids to access the facilities.
Community playgrounds offer a multitude of benefits that reach beyond fun and aesthetics. Playgrounds allow children to sharpen their emotional, physical, cognitive, and social skills. Additionally, children interact with others, make new friends, and learn to take turns. The increased interactions give the kids a clearer view of the world. Another audience in a position to provide more playgrounds is the government. The government bears the responsibility of providing recreational facilities to its citizens. Thus, a facility that is very vital in improving people's lives should be the government's priority. Other people in a position to improve by constructing new playgrounds and renovating the existing ones are the Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and donors. The people play a significant role in improving the quality of playgrounds in schools and provide funds for constructing new ones in the area where there is none.
The community that I have in mind is the children of the city of New Orleans. The city of New Orleans is renowned for its unique culture, culminating in the past decades. I developed an interest in this city because of its small area concerning the many populations it hosts. The population increase is because the city is one of the largest tourist destinations due to its diverse culture and strategic location in Mississippi's mouth. Besides, the city offers an endless opportunity for entertainment through is jazz soundtrack and other cultural festivals. Just like many other cities in the United States, New Orleans has experienced an increased crime rate. Due to overpopulation, the city facilities have proved inadequate to cater to the children in the city and be used to host the many cultural festivals throughout the year. Efforts to establish new playgrounds are faced with many challenges, mainly due to lack of enough space to construct sizeable playgrounds that will accommodate adult areas, areas, and facilities for children and that for children with disabilities.
When incorporating pathos, I think it is essential to appeal to the city leadership and the community at large that we need to have more playgrounds. The majority of the city dwellers come from different cultural backgrounds and have lived in New Orleans for decades. However, there are still many cases of racism that have led to violence and other criminal activities in the city. Music bands' importance in socializing people can not be disputed, but this is not enough, especially for young children. Playgrounds will provide the people with enough places to meet and interact, thus appreciating each other.
Although it is challenging to convince people to engage in physical activities regularly, I am very hopeful that playgrounds' adequate availability will encourage people to take their children to the facilities to play. Assumptions may arise that the lifestyle disease can also be reduced by eating less and that the children usually interact and engage in physical activities while in school. However, I would say that this is not enough because children have limited time in the school playgrounds. However, a concern may arise at the cost of constructing these playgrounds.
Logically, many would agree that playgrounds are crucial in facilitating physical activities for children, adults, and people living with a disability. Lack of enough playgrounds reduces the number of physical exercises that people do. Many children become overweight, and their emotional, social, cognitive, and physical development is affected. Research done in 2010 indicated that one in every three children in the United States is overweight ("Benefits of Community Playgrounds | Landscape Structures, Inc," 2020). A sessile lifestyle is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases, high blood pressure, and diabetes. Doctors have continuously advocated for increased physical activities if such diseases have to be controlled without incurring the extra medication cost. Since playgrounds' benefits to children cannot be disputed, then more playgrounds with high-quality facilities for people, including those with special needs, should be provided close to their homes.
