The Gush Katif settlement bloc

The Gush Katif settlement bloc was one of the key 17 Israeli settlements in the southern Gaza strip. The Israeli commander was faced with various ethical dilemmas. The troops had to contend with the emotional appeals as most of the settlers told them that the eviction was immoral. Women were wailing and children were crying. Their brothers were either fighting or shouting at them. Therefore, they had to live with the sufferings of their brothers and sisters in their conscience . Tens of thousands of soldiers who were tasked with carrying out the eviction absconded their duties of carrying out the eviction commands. To evict the settlers against their will and live with the regrets in the consciences as the people cursed them for their role in evicting them from the Gush Katif settlement bloc to unknown places where they will undergo suffering and possible death .

The families of the soldiers either lived in the west bank settlement while their parents were the earliest members of the settler movement. The army commander had lived in the settlement for a long time with his family. His father lived and died in the settlement and everyone called him to reconsider the orders given to him instead of executing the orders without critical thinking. The Israeli commanders had to fight his personal conviction, beliefs and values. While he had orders to execute, he had to take into consideration the fact that he was evacuating human being not animals. It is difficult for a Jew to evict another Jew knowing too well that there are no proper plans for the people. The Jews that were evacuated were compensated and not everyone was compensated. It was very difficult for the Jewish commander and the Israeli commanders to executive their missions knowing too well that they were wrong in executing the commands.

The army commanders were themselves coming from the Gaza strip itself so they found it hard to execute the commands knowing too well that they were dealing with their brothers and friends . Most of the army was deeply opposed to the idea of evacuating their Jewish brothers and friends. So they were faced with an ethical dilemma and personal dilemma of either executing the commands and hurting their brothers or absconding their duties and standing in solidarity with their family and friends. It was clear the philosophy of nonviolence could work because he knew many of the settlement leaders personally. However, if they continued to resists, he could be prompted to use force. Violence was his last resort, but only if the settlers behaved .

The Gaza strip

The people cited ethical reason, religious reason, and or historical and political reason why evicting them from the Gush Katif settlement bloc was wrong and the soldiers were wrong for participating in victim them from the lands. Ethically evicting the Jews from the Gush Katif settlement bloc was wrong as many people suffered after having spent a lot of time in the region and having grown up in the region. Many people who lived in the settlement block had known no other home apart from the Gaza. For example, many believe that God gave the land that they were occupying to them so they had no reason to live under the government’s directives . On the other hand, many other believed that that the land was to them a sanctuary where they found solace after fleeing from war and persecution . As such, the army commander had to either ignore all the complaints made by the people and evict them as ordered or listen to their complaints and reason with them. Never the less, reasoning with the people was difficult as it was not easy to please everyone considering the government’s directives .

The Gaza strip was home to many Israelis more so the Gush Katif settlement. Sending Israeli soldiers to evict their fellow Israelis May have been the only option but was not the right approach to handle the evacuation exercise. The solders felt like traitors executing their commands while the people felt betrayed by their own brothers and the government. It is also important to note that while the solders and the Israeli commanders were executing their duties, their faith and Zionists ideals were against the demands of the commands. Despite their effort to persuade the settlers to leave peacefully and in good faith, there were a lot of demonstration and resistances. The commander therefore had to face his own conversion and carry out commands against the their beliefs
