In this paper, a job analysis for the position of a safety manager in the hospitality industry is carried out. The The evaluation process will entail defining the duties of the safety manager as well as the attributes and skills that will be needed to deliver on these requirements. While the position of safety manager applies to many industries, the hospitality industry is one among many that require the input from this job position. In most cases, the safety manager serves the same tasks as a safety officer. Their primary obligation is to ensure that the health risks which jeopardize the safety of clients are identified and addressed in due time. Swissotel Hotels & Resorts is an example of an institution that a safety manager can be employed (FRHI, 2013). At the moment, Swissotel Hotels & Resorts, specifically Swissotel Al Maqam, is looking to hire a safety officer that will work in Saudi Arabia.
Job Analysis Steps
The process of job analysis can be summarized into five steps, which are highlighted as showcased below:
- Identification of the job to be analyzed
- Determination of the procedures to be used in job data collection collecting (interviews, questionnaires, and surveys)
- Implementation of the job analysis methods that were initially identified
- Reviewing the data that was collected through the process of job analysis
- Lastly, summarizing and documentation of the job data collected
Data Set
Following extensive research on the obligations that are to be bestowed to the safety manager for Swissotel Al Maqam, the unique roles and duties can be identified. One of the primary responsibilities of the safety manager is to ensure that health and safety guidelines are observed (FRHI, 2013). In the case of Swissotel Hotels & Resorts, the safety manager will be required to facilitate compliance with occupational health and safety (OHS) guidelines. In addition to this duty, the safety manager will be necessary to ensure that measures are in place to minimize hazards as well as situations that will be deemed as unhealthy. There is always the risk of violations being carried out hence the need for the safety manager to keep an eye on any violations and address them (FRHI, 2013). Instructing and advising on safety-related topics such as noise levels will be another responsibility. Reviewing safety policies that are existent as well as updating them according to current regulations is also another obligation (Chiang, 2000). Overseeing the installation, disposal, as well as maintenance of different substances, is another role (FRHI, 2013). Lastly, they will be required to identify and stop any unsafe acts that jeopardize the health of the clients.
Job Description
Excellent communication skills are a requirement to hold such a position. Educational requirement entails BSc/BA in safety management. There is the need for accredited certification that that comes with the job, which is a necessity. Experience is also required for effective task delivery. The ability to work with others as a team member is helpful in the delivery of the duties that have been noted.
