What types of designs are used in each of the two research studies you are evaluating and comparing? Why do you think the authors choose these designs?
The type of research design used by McClean, Burris & Detert (2013) is a descriptive research design while Wayne & Casper, (2012) used the experimental research design. McClean, Burris & Detert (2013) chose the descriptive research design because they wanted to describe the phenomenon and not the causative factors. Pon the other hand, Wayne & Casper, (2012) used the experimental research design because they wanted to determine the causal relationship between phenomena such as organizations reputation.
How do the authors of each article identify and address the potential disadvantages of the design?
McClean, Burris & Detert (2013) stated that the limitation of the descriptive research design is that it did not provide the causative relations between the employee voice and turnover. The limitation is that the effect was not provided by the descriptive method because it only described and not investigated the cause. The researcher only stated that future research should explore other designs to determine the causal relationship.
Wayne & Casper, (2012) stated that the limitation of their design is that there were chances of bias as the effect or treatment was not equally applied. The other disadvantages are that the experimental research design is subject to error. The researcher addressed the limitation by conducting a confirmatory factor analysis.
How do the authors of each article identify and account for effects?
McClean, Burris & Detert (2013) conducted a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) to examine the discriminant validity of the three moderator variables. Wayne & Casper, (2012) tested the measurement model using structural equation modeling (SEM) in LISREL 8.8.
Compare and evaluate the strengths of each design. Which design is more effective? Why?
The advantages of the experimental research design the fact that it provides the causal relationship between variables; can allow the research gain insight into the phenomena under study. It is also easy to replicate and the researcher has tighter control over the variables. On the other hand, the descriptive research design has strengths such as the costs effectiveness and simplicity. The subjects of the research and observed without manipulation. The descriptive research design allows for the collection of in-depth information which can be collected from large samples easily. The experimental research design is the most preferred because it is objective and can be used to determine the causal relationship between variable.
