World War I was fought between the years 1914 and 1928. The First World War was a conflict between the allied powers and the central powers. The allied powers consisted of the USA, Great Britain, Italy, Japan, Russia, France, and Romania while central powers were instituted by nations like Germany, Ottoman Empire, Bulgaria, and Austria-Hungary. Tensions that resulted in WW I began when the heir to the Austria-Hungarian Empire (Archduke Franz Ferdinand) was killed by Serbian nationalists who were aiming to put to an end to the rule of Austro-Hungarian Empire over Bosnia and Herzegovina (History.com Editors, 2019). Supported by Germany, the Austro-Hungarian Empire announced War on Serbia on July 28, 1914. Serbia obtained war assistance from Russia and other allies like France, Great Britain, and Belgium, and peace around Europe collapsed resulting in WW I.
On the other hand, World War II began in 1939-two decades after the end of WW I and fought until 1945. The Second World War II involved a battle between the allied and the Axis powers. The allied powers mainly consisted of the US, Great Britain, France, Russia, Poland, China, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Belgium, Greece, Yugoslavia, and the Netherlands. The Axis powers were mainly comprised of Nazi Germany, the Kingdom of Italy, and the Empire of Japan. When Nazi Germany led by its leader Adolf Hitler invaded Poland (a state-guaranteed of military support from France and Britain) on September 1, 1939, it forced both Great Britain and France to declare war on Germany that led to WW II (History.com Editors, 2019).
Differences Between WW I and WW II
WW I and WW II had their differences as outlined below. One of the differences seen between WW I and WW II is on Japan's contribution. During WW I, Japan belonged to the Allied Powers but in WW II, it belonged to the axis powers. Another difference is observed on the contribution of air battle to the wars. Air battle during WW I was not impactful as it did during WW II because of the use of military planes during WW I was on inception. Moreover, the causes of each war differentiate the two. World War I was caused by instabilities across Europe while World War II was fought to curb a territorial invasion of the Axis powers (Japan, Germany, and Italy) around the world. Outcomes of the Wars
Both wars were characterized by the victory of Allied powers against their respective antagonists. The resultant outcome of WW I was widespread economic problems around Europe because of debts and countries like Germany having to pay war reparations as declared in the Versailles treaty. The outcome of WW II was the growth of communism in the world and the global change in power to two superpowers (the US and the Soviet Union) from the earlier dominance of Europe.
