Introduction
My nursing philosophy and theory both have an essential meaning in practicing advanced nursing. As a nurse, I should have the ability to deliver expected health care keeping in mind the major theoretical frameworks that determine the vision and roles nurses play in contemplating the patients' needs.
A philosophical theory by jean Watson about human care focuses on nursing care based on holistic care and interpersonal contact to ensure its efficiency. My reflection on this theory about human caring, personal attributes like values and principles, emphasizes weaknesses and reveals how to counteract them when a particular framework is applied (Peplau et al. 2018).
Personal Nursing Philosophy
My philosophy on personal nursing revolves around principles, values, and beliefs that affect nursing care directly. My role in ensuring improvement in patients' mental and physical fitness and the nursing meaning in healthcare determines my nursing philosophy. My core belief is that a nurse should be a provider, an advocate of the patients, a guide, and a teacher in one competent person for he/she to perform.
Some situations may require intense nursing concepts and principles, so a nurse must differentiate cases according to their intensity. Being able to perform different roles according to a position is a significant attribute of personal philosophy, which provides the required healthcare to a patient (Cusack et al. 2016). To conclude, without the needed flexibility in changing roles, it is impossible to offer patient-centered and holistic care according to my nursing philosophy. The ability to perform multiple functions by a nurse, depending on a problematic situation, is a remarkable personal philosophy feature. The knowledge helps cooperate with nurses and provide high-quality care to patients. According to my nursing philosophy, it is impossible to offer holistic and patient-centered care without having enough flexibility to switch between the roles.
My philosophy as a nurse is compassion, which is my significant value. Through compassion as a nurse, It makes it possible for me to understand the different needs of different patients and examine their mental, physical, emotional, and social status.
As a nursing professional, I consider the need to care for patients and attend to all their needs. If nurses thoroughly treat all the patient's physical needs in hospitals, it would be comforting for patients in hospitals, and in most cases, some will opt not to leave the health facilities as it would be a discomfort to them.
My philosophy comprises various principles that guide my profession into development and growth. I consider all the needs of a patient, the environmental effects, and their impact on their mental status, not forgetting their physical health. If patients continue to live in an environment with stress, and even families with poor relationships among its members, their psychological health will continue to be disturbed. In such cases, it is vital to take care of the patients' environments preventing the impact on their health status.
My other principle in my profession is to deliver care to patients based on the dynamic natures of patients' health, as it varies at times. The dynamic changes are indicated by health indicators that may change depending on the habit and the patient's behavior patterns. Thus it is essential to teach people the importance of living a good life as it will be well with the patient's health, directly creating a new health system free of these issues (Kitson et al. 2018). My philosophy also entails committing myself to each patient and the community at large. By delivering all care to patients and enlightening society on their health demands, my nursing care will be more effective. Through this method, creating conducive environments for caring for patients will thus be of significant importance to the health sector.
Professional Nursing Philosophy
My nursing philosophy is fitted best by the theory carried out by Jean Watson. The match is because this theory directly connects to how nurses in healthcare facilities handle patients in ensuring that care is promoted. Watson's theory also explains how nurses improve their professionalism by providing that patients do not walk home with the complications they came in the hospital.
The thesis describes how nurses learn new interventions to deal with their patients to increase satisfaction levels. The entire outline of Watson's theoretical framework rotates around the relationship between the nurse and the patient. Human caring theory backs up that nurses are responsible for the full complexity of the needs a patient undergoes. The nurse is accountable for issues cutting across not only acute illnesses but also chronic conditions. Watson's framework further suggests that nurses play a significant role in providing their patients with the knowledge to manage their health.
The experience which comes from the nurses, in turn, prevents outcomes that are harmful to the patient and makes the patients have a sense about their health. Being knowledgeable is advantageous to the patients because they can identify health issues to prevent problems from arising.
By providing the information, Jean Watson's theoretical framework creates a reflection of critical nursing philosophy. The framework brings the roles which are significant to supporting the well-being of the patients by the nurses. The connection between Watson's theory and my thesis's assumptions is the connection between nurses caring for the patients. the difference between me and her theory is that she has integrated her approach into a framework.
Watson's model has several numbers of assumptions. The first assumption is that she suggests that an effective way of addressing people's needs is interpersonal care. In second, her belief because my field also focuses on interacting with patients to deliver personalized care. In her theory, Watson's second assumption is that some causative factors are required from care to aid nurses in dealing with patients' complexities. From my perspective as a nurse, I suggest that the crucial elements should be considered in dealing with a patient's complexities.
Watson's third assumption says that efficient and effective care plays a significant role in the patient's growth. The change can be from the family members or from within the patient himself /herself. Her assumption is to be reckoned with because external information about health promotion ensures that the patient's health quality is improved. Watson's theory focuses more on promoting nurse's objectives and goals that are personal in promoting their patients' health.
The environment should be caring, according to Watson's theoretical framework. From my view, I support that environment has a role to play in improving or affecting the quality of care to the patients ( boost the efficiency or reduce the effectiveness of treatment). Environmental may include external or internal noise, light, and visitors' number to the patient's room. It is fundamental to analyze the possible environmental factors that can affect the patients' care quality to omit them.
Poor Fit of the Framework
The theoretical framework's main weakness is that it focuses on the psycho-social factors over the physical health-related problems. The theoretical framework is weak since it does not focus on the diversity of different cases affecting patients. For example, suppose a patient has a broken leg. In that case, the nurse tries to create interpersonal contact with the patient to developmental comfort, somewhat the patient's physical fitness (Both-Nwabuwe et al. 2020). Watson's theoretical framework focuses mainly on mental comfort more than the material in human caring. Her theory is inapplicable in emergency cases where the main aim is to save the patient's life. Patients, in this case, need professional care from the nurses who should be experienced. The theory becomes effective if life is first saved, and post-operative care is given to the patient.
Flexibility means using the appropriate nursing theory and principles of the personal nursing philosophy, which might be the best way to master the patient's needs. Since the nurses' main work is to ensure that physically and mentally comfortable, a framework in which its applicability won't have complications is imperatively considered in dealing with clinical cases.
Conclusion
To conclude, my nursing philosophy is closely attached to Jaen Watson's theoretical framework. My ideas and opinions are intensively tied to her theoretical framework. There is an intersection between her and my personal beliefs, principles, and values in caring for patients focusing on developing care that is sound to quality care improvement. Watson's theoretical framework has a weakness in dealing with clinical cases with physical pain because it focuses on mental comfort. It is essential to use different theoretical frameworks without changing their nursing philosophy to ensure patient satisfaction through professionalism (MacPhee et al. 2012).
