Dementia is a general term that is used to describe a wide range of symptoms that shows the decline in mental ability which can be so severe to an extent of interfering with the daily life of the affected person. It is associated with memory loss as an example and the most common type of dementia is Alzheimer's disease since it accounts a greater percentage of the cases around 60-80 percent. Another common type of dementia is Vascular Dementia which occurs as a result of the stroke. However, there are a number of conditions that can cause symptoms of dementia some can be reversible such as thyroid problems and vitamin deficiency.
Dementia has a number of causes, it is majorly caused by damage to the brain cells, and this damage to the brain cells interferes with the ability of the brain cells to communicate with one another. This miscommunication of the cells results in thinking behavior and the feelings of the affected person being affected. Different types of dementia are associated with particular types of brain cells interference in a particular distinct region of the brain. For instance, in Alzheimer's disease, high levels of certain proteins inside and outside brain cells making it challenging for the general health and communication of the cells. The brain region called the hypo campus is the central region of learning a memory in the brain and they are often the first to be damaged and that's why memory loss is the earliest symptom of Alzheimer's disease.
Sign and symptoms of Alzheimer's disease include, memory loss that destructs daily life, the affected person forget the recently learned information and other important things .the next sign is challenging in planning and solving problems, the affected person may experience several difficulties to work with numbers or keeping track of records, they also have difficulties in concentrating and they tend to take too much time to complete a given task. The patience of this disease also has difficulties in completing daily task also they are the normally loose record of dates seasons and passage of time. The other signs include trouble understanding visual images and spatial relationship, they also tend to show signs of not able to speak or write as efficiently as before. They also have decreased or poor judgment that is they may experience changes in decision making and they may start paying less attention to their general cleanliness. They also experience drastic changes in mood and personality. They occasionally become confused, depressed, upset or anxious.
In the diagnosis of dementia, there is no single test to determine if someone is suffering from dementia, the doctor instead diagnoses other types of dementia and Alzheimer's based on careful medication history, laboratory test, the characteristics changes in thinking, physical examination and daily functioning and behavior associated with each type. Dementia treatment and care vary depending on the cause of the given dementia. For example, most progressive dementias such Alzheimer's disease has lacked cure and they are no definite treatment that slows or halts its progression. However, they are drugs that may be used to temporarily improve the symptoms. Non-drug therapy can also be employed to alleviate some symptoms of dementia.
Nursing on dementia is of necessity to avoid and prevent further complications associated with the disease since the brain if for much importance for an individual because it controls all the activities of the body and other biological functions that are critical for survival. Hence the need of implication of nursing to enhance fundamental knowledge about the brain nervous system to help to reduce the burden of the neurological disease. And also it helps in looking the brain science for the effective treatment of so many people suffering from the disease.
There are several nursing examinations that are required for those suffering from dementia, they vary from physical, social, spiritual to economic assessment. The physical assessment help to rule out the causes of dementia that can be treated and identify signs of stroke and other related disorders that can contribute to dementia.it also include the identification of other illnesses that can overlap with dementia and possible solutions and recommendation for them. Social assessment is also of great importance for those suffering from dementia. It includes all the social services that are provided for dementia diagnosed patients. Alzheimer's disease significantly increases the health care cost and the affect the quality of life of the patients that have been diagnosed with the disease and the people that surrounds them such as care givers and this need to be assessed to come up with beneficial treatment effects and come up with suggestions on potential savings in healthcare cost and reduction of burden to the caregivers.
