Leadership is among the most strategic aspects of developing and managing morale. Military leaders control rewards and punishments that shape the behavior of soldiers and influence their confidence, attitude, performance, and motivation. There are various theories and practices of military leadership styles (Hamid et al., 2018). The three major ones are transactional leadership, transformational leadership, and servant leadership (Hamid et al., 2018). With the transactional style, leaders look for mutually satisfying results by giving clear instructions and making employees accountable for their actions. It eliminates the guesswork, a very significant aspect of all military agencies' command chain work structure. The transformational leadership style involves charismatic leaders. These leaders use intellect to inspire subordinates. It is the most effective style of leadership for servicemen who find themselves in unfriendly situations where the only means of survival is taking decisive actions and quick thinking (Hamid et al., 2018). The primary reason for enlisting is to serve the country. However, many soldiers claim that it is because they fight the person beside them. The essence of servant leadership is its thrilling dedication to serving others.
Leadership qualities in the military are formed in a sequential and advanced series of planned training, experiential, and educational events. Besides, leaders in the military hold high authority and responsibility levels at low organizational levels. Thus, military leadership involves the concept of self-sacrifice, service, and duty (Northouse, 2018). Soldiers take the oath to this effect. They have to lead in a way that inspires rather than requires confidence and trust. In an organization where followers trust and believe in a charismatic leadership style, they change into willing instead of just compliant agents. Such an influence can be referred to as a transformational leadership style, and it is the most appropriate for a military organization.
