Introduction

Gender reassignment surgery for male to female involves giving a new shape to the male genitals to make it appear as that of women and, even if possible, to make it function the same as the female genitals. The people who undergo this type of surgery must always go through hormone replacement therapy and facial hair removal. Furthermore, such patients may also opt for other surgeries such as facial feminization and breast augmentation to adapt to the changes that come with the surgery. This extra credit essay analyzes the story of John Joan. A young boy lost his male genitals from an accident and underwent a sex reassignment surgery.

The reaction towards John Joan Story

John Joan's story is so touching. It is so traumatizing that he lost his genitals at such a young age and underwent a gender reassignment surgery without his consent. It was wrong for the doctors to carry out the surgery even after John showed the signs of being reluctant. Besides, his parents warned him not to play the games that his brother played worsened the situation since he was already depressed and afraid of being mocked and laughing at. This was as if his parent were trying to separate him from his brother.

Surprising Facts

The most surprising fact is that the doctors knew that the surgery would not work. Besides, John showed signs that he could not survive it, but they overlooked it and went ahead to perform the surgery. They never considered his consent. Furthermore, John's surgery was not a success, but what was written in the books is quite different. Many people believed that John had a successful surgery and that he was a happy, adjusted female. Yet John ended up a bitter young man for almost twenty years after the surgery (John)

John's surgery was not successful. For starters, John states that it was not a success story for him and that it was biased (John). Furthermore, after the surgery, John was so bitter about the past and could not do what girls do. So he still lived as male twenty years after the surgery. Besides, he was not the happy, adjusted female that people thought he was since, after several years, he had to go through other surgeries to reconstruct another penis.

It was wrong for the doctors to perform a gender reassignment surgery on a ten-year-old boy without his consent from an ethical perspective. Besides, John kept on showing the signs that the surgery would not work but gave him the cold shoulder and carried on their surgery showed the doctors were only concerned with their reputation and not their victims' health.

Conclusion

Gender reassignment surgery for male to female involves giving a new shape to the male genitals to make it appear as that of women and, even if possible, to make it function the same as the female genitals. John is just an example of the people who have undergone this type of surgery. However, John's case was not a success because, several years after the surgery, he still had to undergo other surgery to reconstruct another penis.
