Smartphones have made it easier for people to access anything that they want on the internet. Online platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, and WhatsApp have taken the Minds of individuals who spend their time on the internet. The technology companies control the minds of the people to their advantage. In his video, Harris talks about how technology companies manipulate the minds of unsuspecting internet users. The "Black Supremacy Tweet" by Terry is an example of how the internet can blow the minds of so many people at once.
Harris discusses how technology companies use mind psychology to get internet users glued to internet content. He says the technology companies provide information that would manipulate the mind of the user so that they spend more extended time surfing the net. Companies get people's attention through notifications that pop up when someone is online. The main motive behind these companies making one spend a lot of time on the internet is to make these investors earn more profit, given that they depend on online advertisements to generate income. Harris recommends that people have to train themselves on how to limit being distracted while on the internet by training to focus.
Technology companies only care for your money and nothing else. The reason Google has so many pop-ups and advertisements on their websites is to try and get the user's attention. By doing that, a user spends more time online, most probably reading, not what he or she intended to. Internet users need to know that technology companies use them for their advantage. It is the users' money that the technology companies use to develop their cooperation. Learning to focus would help an individual concentrate on whatever took them to the internet. Paying no attention to YouTube auto-plays would make an individual more productive on the internet rather than just loading any video that comes into view. The users need to know that technology companies use their psychology to personalize the content on their gadgets. That is why the notification that one receives on their smartphones is always relevant to what they frequently search online.
It is the responsibility of internet users to take care of themselves while using the internet. Harris says that technology companies do not care a dime about internet users. Internet users should manage their time wisely while using the internet. However, Harris notes that internet users lack time management skills because notifications lure most of them into spending a longer time on the internet. What the people do not know is that those Facebook notifications are meant to make them spend more time on the internet, for the advantage of the technology companies. For instance, the tweet by Terry on black supremacy sways the minds of millions of netizens. It is amazing how one individual can get comments from a million individuals, which is only advantageous to Twitter investors. It's high time people get to understand that wasting time and money on the internet makes them a coin poorer while enriching the already wealthy technology companies.
It is indeed true that mind psychology works for technological companies. When one looks at the net worth of technology company investors, it is correct to infer that these people are stinking rich because they drain internet users of their money. At only 36 years old, Mark Zuckerberg, the Facebook founder, is worth $ 85.4 billion by 2020. Jam Koum the WhatsApp founder's net worth stands at $19.3 billion by the year 2020. Who is fooling Who? Internet users need to be smart so that they can save time and money while working online.
