Greetings to you all and congratulations for your admission to the RN-BSN program for this academic year. I understand that it has taken an effort and determination to make it here. Note that, it does not matter where you have come from, as long as you are here. I know how it feels to be a new student; shaky and sweaty palms, the early mornings and the testing exams that will keep you sleepless most of the times. Indeed, you should learn to cherish them every day because they will be part of your routine. Therefore, you should all be ready to take on the challenge that comes with the course. Again, congratulations and welcome to the fraternity of student nurses! However, there are a few things that I would like you to note before you start your BSN program.
First, this is not a program for the faint hearted; it is for those who are ready to put that extra effort around the clock, for the betterment of the society. In this program, you are going to associate with lots of people; some with experience in the nursing profession and others without any knowledge at all. However, it is your responsibility to learn from them so that you can become better people at the end of the course. In any case, you are in this BSN program to learn, as such, your first priority is to make efforts to study every person that you associate with in the course of the program. In this case, you will need to be tolerant and patient with all those you meet. Notably, there are some people who are going to demean you because of your lack of experience, but do not worry because there is light at the end of the tunnel. I know some you regard education as a passive process where the lecturer is the only person who is supposed to be disseminating information to you. However, that narrative does not apply in the BSN program; this is an interactive course where everybody is expected to participate, giving own views and expectations and gauging them with those of others.
The other thing that I feel that you all need to know is that you will not prosper in this course unless you work hard. Unfortunately, this will mean that some of you will have to repeat the classes due to poor grades. However, do not be afraid since this is just an exception. The general expectation is that every student nurse will do well. To succeed in this program you will have to be the leader and not the follower. Be in the forefront in submitting assignment and in suggesting solutions to the problems that will be encountered. More specifically, you will have to understand that this is about service to patients. Therefore, be braced to take care of them and give them hope. In this regard, the society will rely on you to take care of the old and young. More importantly, the life of many patients will depend on you. Therefore, be ready for all that this course entails. Lastly, it will be my greatest pleasure to watch you grow to become great nurses. Even if you think it is tricky; be ready for the challenge. I wish you well in your quest to become a professional nurse.
Good luck!
