Introduction
A nurse practitioner has different roles. The training equips the nurse with abilities and skills to perform such functions with utmost diligence (Marzalik et al., 2018). A nurse can operate medical equipment, give prescriptions, and perform diagnostic tests and patient education, among others.
The ANA guidelines show direction on how nursing excellence can be evaluated. The guidelines direct the nurse on what to do when dealing with a patient (Hyatt et al., 2017). The guidelines help the nurse perform the roles expected with a sense of care and direction. It helps promote professionalism.
Nursing competencies help one fulfill the roles of a nurse when dealing with the patient. Competencies help improve the quality of nursing care in different fields of nursing. Behaviorism, nursing trait and nursing holism are essential aspects of nursing competency (Marzalik et al., 2018). It guides the nurse to perform the roles expected with the expected skills and care.
The code of ethics is a critical tool for nursing practice now and in future. It guides the practicing nurse on ethical values, duties and the obligations in nursing (Gray et al., 2019). Performance of nursing roles is sensitive to the lives of patients, and thus the code of ethics ensures sincerity and duty of care by the nurse.
Explanation about the differences in Roles
In the maternity care model, midwifery is a valued and recognized element. There are different types of midwifery which include Certified Professional Mid-Wife, Certified Nurse Mid-Wife and Certified Mid-Wives. Their roles differ in practice, and each part impacts the way we work (Marzalik et al., 2018).
Certified Professional Mid-Wife (CPM),
It is a credential available through the North –American Registry of Mid-Wives (Marzalik et al., 2018). CPM requires the holder of such credentials to demonstrate knowledge and have the experience of midwifery even in out of hospital setups. CPM encourages practitioners to practice more and gather mid-wife experience. For example, CPM can work in private homes and Birth centres (Marzalik et al., 2018).
Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM)
Certified Nurse Midwife is trained for both nursing and midwifery. These are advanced practice registered nurses who can perform many nursing roles and also mid-wife practice (Marzalik et al., 2018). It impacts the way a nurse works since the nurse takes care of the mother not only in the childbearing period but also in her lifespan. For example, taking care of her antenatal clinics and treating her and the baby in case of illness (Marzalik et al., 2018).
Certified Mid-Wives
Certified midwives are non-nurse practitioners in midwifery who follow the same criteria as a CNM, CM and APR-Ns. They provide care during childbirth and provide the necessary information to the mother. For example, they guide on the best feeding method (Homer et al., 2019).
Conclusion
Midwifery is a critical profession. It promotes maternal care for mothers and infants, which makes it a valued element in maternal care.
