I had a pleasure of interviewing my peer classmate who happens to be working in one of the Mayo Clinic as a Forensic Nurse in the emergency room and also as a internal medicine nurse in the hospital. Basically, the interview questions were constructed into two parts that is, Part A (structured questions) and Part B(open-ended question);even though the questions were only four in number, I still manage to get to know her roles as a team member in the healthcare facilty, her perception on how the professional responsibility influences her work and the leadership steward in the Clinic.
Role as a health care team member
The interview began with the member describing herself as the Forensic nurse in the Mayo Clinic and had several responsibilities bestowed on her and she stated that she was glad for the roles she was playing in the Clinic" I have a defined roles to play and I'm always grateful to carry out the tasks as long it benefits my patients, colleagues and the society" she said. The significance of this review of the peer interview was to examine an individual professional fellow peer trainee responsibilities and main contributions to a specific healthcare team and elaborate on the factors that allow the teams to function effectively to enhance better service to the patients. According to her, she viewed a healthcare is a team combination, and synergies and each member a has a special responsibility to conduct but still all have to work in collaboration and referrals. We had a long interaction with my peer who happens to be working in one of the best healthcare facilities in the state and she had a lot to share with me during our interaction in the interview.
She works in the facility as a Forensic nurse in the emergency room facility. She had many responsibilities within the facility, and various roles to play that were essential in the case management of patients. She elaborated one of her significant role as to ensure an excellent link to enhance effective communication to give support to the patient and among other disciplinarians. Again, it is her responsibility to facilitate the patients transfer and discharge in time by liaising with the post-discharge service such as the social service department. Moreover, she presented her patients as an advocate during the patient's treatment period and ensuring that they get the services they deserve from the healthcare facility to get better.
Nevertheless, as a Forensic nurse, she has the responsibility to provide the patients, caregivers and the families with the relevant information on a regular basis and ensuring that they keep updated o the patient's progress. Occasionally, she helps in the audit, patients' documentation and can also implement a specific degree of service intervention. As a fellow nurse practitioner, she made me realize that a nurse does have a broader range of skills such as conducting treatment as prescribed by a doctor and that nurses have advanced training depending on each one's specialization. 'You do not have to complain even if an additional responsibility is added as long as you find it convenient and an emergency situation,' she added.
It was evident from the conducted interview that there are subsets within the profession of nursing and that not all the nurses are the same in the roles that they play in different health care. The interviewee seemed to clearly understand her roles in the team and this made her more competent within the working setting.
Define professionalism and how does professional responsibility influence your work
Later in the interviewee, she described the term professionalism and stipulated that many professional Individuals tend to have different ways of defining the term professionalism, especially in the nursing field. My interviewee took her own stand and seemed to have her version of referring to term professionalism (Tilin and Morgan 2013). She defined the term professionalism in regards the field of nursing stating that the professionalism is a dynamic and inevitable process and that it depends on the state of mind and the attitude of an individual that influences one's behavior in either responsible or professional way. It was further suggested that professionalism is crucial in achieving a healthy and safer working environment.
How professional responsibility influences work
In the interview she further described that the professional responsibility as the ethical and moral obligations in a profession, my interviewee mention such obligations such as collaboration with other professionals, moral standards and integrity. Sometimes it is quite difficult to realize that other team members can notice your behavior at the workplace whether it is professional or unprofessional.
However, the interviewee also remarks that the colleagues and the client can easily notice any unprofessional conduct thus professional responsibility is inevitable in our works. Throughout the interview, she insisted that one has to clearly understand the concepts of professional boundaries since it entirely influences our actions in almost all fields of professionalism. Therefore, a professional need to avoid any personal gains at the expense of the client to prevent poor patient and nurse relations and maintain the practice and trust that is consistent with the set standards of any professional field.
She recognizes that when an individual is working with an emphasis on professional conduct, it makes him or her to deliver their role effectively. For instance, when a nurse is licensed, he or she will advocate for her patients without expecting any favors (Lachman et al. 2012). When one behaves in professional conduct, this will enhance the trust of the client and makes her performance relatively easier and become accountable for personal actions.
Do you consider leaders in your organization stewards of health care?
Throughout the interview with my peer, she tends to be very supportive of the organization Stewards of the healthcare and highlighted various reasons for the same. The leadership facilitated by the nurse wisdom and guides the nurse shift of reasoning. Moreover, leaders, especially in the nursing field, require evidence to understand how stewards gathered ethics might influence behavior quality. Again, the practice of stewardship helps advance a professional's practice by the application of the laid down general principle. The interviewee stated that Stewardship concept provides the leaders within the healthcare where she works on the integration of practical reasoning and facilitates her colleagues to act on moral standards.
Is it necessary to you that leaders exercise professional advocacy and authenticity as well as power and influence when working with colleagues?
The interview process lasted for about 30 minutes and I had a chance to get on what she thinks about the leaders exercising advocacy, power and authenticity when working with others. As a Forensic nurse, my interviewee had her view on how the leaders have to practice their duties. She stated that, it is essential for any leader to act with vigor and authenticity when conducting their role within the workplace. She commented that, the fact that one is a leader, it automatically instills an added responsibility and functions and even power; therefore, another colleague will look up to the leader for direction and to resolves some specific problems that emerge (Busher, 2015).
She further stipulated that, when the tasks are not accomplished in good time, the leader is supposed to take responsibility for that thus a leader sometimes has to exercise his or her power to get the work done. According to my interviewee, the authenticity is of the essence to the success of a firm or an organization and on the other hand the other hand; the inspirational leadership may enhance performance.
Conclusion
In summary, during the interview, I tend to realize that professionalism requires a lot of dedication as one need to practice with integrity and morals. Again, leadership plays a crucial role in the workplace, and every team member in healthcare has a unique position to play but work in collaboration and understanding.
