Things to Consider When Proofreading

Proofreading a document is essential because it is a way to correct errors and improve the flow of the content. Four things to check when proofreading any piece of writing are capitalization, punctuation, spelling, and grammar.

Cliché and Its Use

Cliché is a term that refers to expressions, phrases, or ideas that are no longer effective, interesting, or have lost their novelty because they have been used so extensively. For this reason, these expressions sound boring and do not have a meaningful impact when used in formal writing.

It was only a matter of time for law enforcement officers to arrest the suspect. The phrase "a matter of time" is a cliché because it has been overused for a long time.

Prewriting Practices

Two essential types of prewriting activities are brainstorming and freewriting. In this regard, the brainstorming technique involves recording general ideas and key points related to a particular topic before writing the main paper. The goal of this prewriting activity is to familiarize oneself with a given topic and identity as many points as possible. The second technique, freewriting, involves recording ideas in one's mind at a moment. It helps writers to identify subjects and topics in which they are interested before starting the main writing activity.

Steps I Would Follow to Prepare for a Test

When preparing for a test, I would first revise my notes regularly as I identify complex topics that I cannot understand properly. Secondly, I would expand upon class notes and relate challenging course concepts with personal experiences and interests to score more marks in such areas. Thirdly, I would find students that comprehend the topics that I find most challenging so that we can revise them together. Thirdly, I would complete mock tests and answer questions at the end of every chapter without using class textbooks and notes to enhance my understanding of the content. In the last step, I would join study groups where we would set practice tests for one another to ensure the content is fresh in our minds as we wait for the exam.

Advances in Technology Are Making People Less Social

Recent technological advancements have improved connections in society as people can easily communicate and interact online. However, the proliferation of social networking sites such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, in addition to a large population owning smartphones, is making people anti-social and less social. That said, many people no longer value face-to-face interactions, which is of great importance for creating sustainable relationships. People now spend most of their time in the virtual world, making it difficult to have quality time with friends and family members. While these technologies enhance social connections, it makes Americans more and more isolated. High dependence on social networking sites for communication and doing business is worsening the situation as it makes people less sociable. Even in public places such as restaurants, one can find groups of people sitting in silence because each one of them wants to concentrate on their smartphones and online conversations. Together, these points show that advances in technology are indeed making people less social.
