The central experience of the passport experience was shadowing the Staff Nurse specialist Kelley Walden for Emergency Department at the Kettering Emergency Centre. During the study, I sought to gain knowledge from a nurse specialist at the emergency department. I learned what their responsibilities are, what skills they require, what kind of situations they tackle daily and what they do during that time and the difference between a regular RN and an RN who works in the emergency department.
While engaging in this activity, the intended outcomes were as listed below.
Demonstrate a broad understanding of issues facing nurse leaders and managers in the promotion of quality outcomes of care.
Apply fundamental concepts of decision-making, conflict management, delegation, change theory, ethical and legal issues in nursing management.
Develop strategies for effective management of resources in the nursing profession and healthcare systems.
Apply concepts of informatics within the nursing roles of evidence-based practice, nursing administration, patient education and research.
The prime knowledge acquired is that every nurse in the emergency department should be keen enough to ensure that all patients receive maximum care as they are the priority in a hospital setting (Parahoo, 2014). Several problems, primarily legal issues, affect what happens to a patient since before any operation consent must be obtained from the client or if incapacitated, the appointed caretaker, guardian or person accorded the power of attorney must give the go-ahead.
Several nurses work in the emergency center to fully help care for all patients. Nurses face myriad problems, such as adequate decision making on what to do when a patient is incapacitated to make a decision, and there is no family member to give authority. Nurses do their best to ensure that all patients are attended to and successfully treated, especially if they are accident victims. If I repeat this study, I will chiefly work to understand all the legal issues that nurses and doctors face in their line of work. Such repetition will help me better comprehend what I am supposed to do and what not to do in a healthcare setting to avert brushes with the law and prevent discontinuation of my serving patients due to incarceration or dates with the law.
I gained critical information to my continued quality care delivery to all patients. As explained earlier, every hospital prioritizes its patients by giving them total care by professionally trained and certified nurses and doctors. All patients are treated professionally by an on-call doctor during the day and another at night; most hospitals always seek to maintain a 4-patients to one RN ratio and pharmacist at the emergency department. Evidence-based research is making decisions depending on the behavior displayed by a patient and the knowledge already acquired by a nurse, giving the healthcare provider the aptitude to decide what is the impeccable medical procedure for a patient before further treatment (Academy of medical-surgical nurses, 2018). Comprehending this simple fact assisted me to discern that I need to undertake more research to best differentiate conditions with similar symptoms for successful and appropriate patient care.
I also learned about staff nursing and that they take 80 patients per day attended to by one doctor during the day and one during the night. Further, I realized that all interns get a 2-year contract and that the emergency department has no pharmacists. Nurses make decisions from evidence, misconceptions, past experiences and by adhering to all legal requirements, which ascertains that the patient receives full attention at all times.
