Judge; Courts

A career in the courts could include tasks like those of a judge who has the responsibility to ensure that sentencing offenders for their crimes follow the law. The professionalism displayed in courts involves effective execution of rights as well as protection for fair trial when evaluating judicial systems (Neubauer & Fradella, 2018). The judge is responsible for the task of administering justice, and the individuals are required to practice impartibility.

Correctional officer; Corrections

A career in corrections involves showing professional standards where practices are meant for the improvement of the offenders. One could work in areas such as correctional facilities, jails, paroles and probations. The profession requires correct dissemination of knowledge to the offenders so that they can be better for themselves and the society as well. Correctional officials recognize that such work is a form of public service, and departments enforce codes of ethics for use in day-to-day activities.

How the Careers represent the Component they belong to

Police officer

A police officer represents the Component of policing because of the role that they have to play. A police officer is an individual who occupies the position of trust in society and has a unique role in maintaining the status of the community. In turn, the society expects and also deserves a high standard of honesty, integrity and trustworthiness from a member of the policing department (Neubauer & Fradella, 2018). The role of a police officer is representative of the goals and mission of the policing Component as they have an obligation to maintain a high level of discipline upon appointment into office.

Judge

The role of a judge to conduct court proceeding represents the Component of courts to issue sentences. A judge is required to be impartial and also strive to interpret the implications of the law correctly. Similarly, a judge also needs to recognize that administering justice does not only means that they interpret the law, but they should also show compassion as well as an understanding for the individuals caught on all sides of the case. The responsibility of a judge represents the goals and mission of the court component because they provide an opportunity for all the parties to be heard by neutral judges.

Correctional officer

The role of a correctional officer is to enforce rules and also keep order inside facilities such as prisons or jails. They are tasked with settling disputes among inmates, any forms of escapes of assaults. They enforce such regulations via effective communication and using other methods like punishments or losing privileges. A correctional officer also has the duty to supervise the activities of inmates and ensure that they obey the set rules (Neubauer & Fradella, 2018). They also inspect facilities and ensure that they meet the standards. The inspection includes checking for any unsanitary conditions, contrabands and also signs of a security breach. The responsibility of a correctional officer represents the goals and mission of the correction component because the roles all reveal their function to correct the behavior of inmates.

Current Trend In Criminal Justice

The current trend in criminal justice is the one on sentencing reforms where lawmakers approved the bill that eliminates life without parole. It is mostly for the individuals who are convicted of felony murder or offences concerning homicides in which their involvement does not reveal that they were the actual killers (Neubauer & Fradella, 2018). The bill is set to allow individuals that have been previously convicted for murder to push for the petition for resentencing only if they meet the qualifications. The legislation aims to reduce the number of people in state prison.

The trend mostly impacts the court component because it is the department that is tasked with sentencing individuals to life in prison. They also determine if the offender's case requires life with or without parole. The reforms have been adopted by many states and include parole reviews, limitations on incarceration for violation of paroles, and establishment of presumptive parole standards. The courts will have to reconsider their decisions since the elimination of life without parole leaves them to consider other sentences that are lenient to the criminals. In such cases, they are limited to exercise the role of interpreting the law. Judges have the ability to go against precedent that gives the flexibility to enforce laws as they wish. This way, it will be different with the presence of new reforms such that they will have to rethink the sentences as well as show compassion when punishing misconduct.
