Buying of local goods refers to the act of buying goods and services produced locally over those produced farther away. It is preferable to buy local goods other than depend on goods produced far away or even shipped from other regions. This is because locally produced goods would have more benefits to individuals and the country as a whole. (Spriggs, 96) According to Katherine Spriggs, it is a healthier and environmental choice to buy locally produced goods as it also helps small farmers around the valley to grow. Despite buying local goods being advantageous, it has a few challenges that come with it such as Global warming, pollution, and dwindling fossil fuels among other things.
Environmental conservation
Buying of goods locally will help in environmental conservation in many ways among them there will be little or no global warming. A lot of large farms use greenhouses in the farming activities which emit gases that cause global warming. Small farms will ensure that no harmful gases are emitted into the environment hence reduction in global warming. There will be a reduction in environment pollution if at all buying of goods locally is adopted as their will be no shipping. The vessels used for shipping of these goods use fuel energy which at times bring pollution to the environment. Opting to buy goods locally will largely reduce environmental pollution since there will be no shipping. Most of large farms are usually monoculture farms which only grow one type of crops and this cause pollution as there is need for diversity.
Cost effective
Apart from buying goods locally being eco friendly, it is also cost effective as money used for shipping is reduced by a large percentage. This is because there is reduction in the high cost of fuel and energy used to transport goods across the world. As much as it would be costly to run small farms, the reduction in cost when there is no shipping will be tremendous reduction. Also, locally produced food helps in reduction of taxes charged on the foods. Food shipped usually attracts high taxes hence making the whole process of food shipping high cost effective.
Boost economy
If people concentrate on buying local goods, then small farmers will start having advantage over large farmers. Small farmers will start increasing their income as their will be ready market for their produce. The small farms will start employing local people hence creating job opportunities for local members of the community around. This as a result will boost the overall economy of the country. Job opportunities to youths will hence reduce crime rates as they will be fully occupied. Katherine Spriggs pg,94 outlines that buying local would reverse the trend towards a positive farming outlook.
Healthy and safer food
Local food is much healthier than the food that is produced far away and shipped. This is because the local food will have more nutrients hence making it safer. The shorter the time between the farm and ones table, the less likely it is that nutrients will be lost from fresh food. Food imported would not be fresh as they have been transported in trucks and planes and stored in warehouses before it is availed to the customers. In addition to that, the food is not only safer but tastes and looks better than food shipped from other regions. Smaller local farms, in contrast, often grow many different varieties of crops to provide a long harvest season, an array of colors, and the best flavors.
Food security
Local food is an investment in the future. By supporting local farmers today, people are helping to ensure that there will be farms in the community tomorrow. That is a matter of importance for food security, especially in light of an uncertain energy future and current reliance on fossil fuels to produce, package, distribute and store food. Food security is a condition related to the supply of food, and individuals' access to it. Small farms will ensure that individuals have full access to food as a result of constant production. Food shipping always involves several procedures such as making orders, clearance at the ports among other activities. This can lead to delay hence interference of access to food.
Conclusion
In conclusion, buying food locally has got more advantages than the demerits that come along. The advantages are more of long term and hence must be embraced. The advantages of buying local food include healthier and safer food, friendly environment, cost effective in the whole process, boost in the countrys overall economy, and reduction in global warming among other things. Finally, I totally agree with the fact that local buying of goods is important to a given country in the long run as the advantages override the downfalls by a landslide.
