In all the Romantic comic films there are always themes that are discussed. This themes are based on social issues and are structures in such a manner that the viewer will still be learning as they are being entertained. In this essay, we shall compare and contrast the theme of love in the films The Palm Beach Story written in 1942, and It happened one night.

Both films are written with the theme of love being a focal theme. In the film, The Palm Beach Story the main characters Tom and Garry are in love. The film starts when the two are trying to get to their wedding venue the author then flash-forward, and we see that they married. Though this couple separate at some point in the movie they always find their way back to the life of each other. We also meet other characters such as McCrea and Colbert who are genuinely in love with each other. In the film, It Happened One Night the main characters are also in love with each other. Ellie Andrew is a rich spoiled Heiress who is in love with his average Peter. Peter shows kind acts to Ellie like making her bed, offering her a scarf when she is wet and even goes out to find her a carrot. In both movies, therefore, the main characters care for each other, and therefore they are the main carriers of love in the films.

Secondly, in both films, the love between the characters is tested with wealth and higher social status. In The Palm Beach film, Gerry leaves Tom to go and marry John D. Hackensacker III who is a wealthy man. Gerry is self-obsessed with the idea of being wealthy in that she sales her body as a commodity while she has little remorse about it. In the film, It Happened One Night Ellie previous social status is a challenge to their relationship. She expects that people to comply with her demands and yet she is not accustomed to waiting for anything. In the film, we also see that in their travel they are faced with a shortage of money something that Ellie does not fully comprehend. In both the story, therefore, money in the determining factor of how the relationship will end.

Though the stories share some major features when it comes to the theme of love each of them has their unique feature. In The Palm Beach film, women are portrayed to be core influence of how love should be. They determine who loves who and at what time. This is seen when Gerry determines who she loves and who she introduces to Tom as a lover. In It Happened One Night Peter takes charge of their love life with Ellie. He decides where they go and at some point uses Ellie money to but staffs without Ellie complaining about it therefore men are the determining gender.

The two films, therefore, give a vivid picture of what love looked like in the early 19s, but they also give the different dimension of love. A viewer, therefore, can look at the view of love holistically.
