Currently, most individuals are diagnosed with kidney illnesses on an annual basis. Some of them encounter difficulties to start dialysis and choosing the most appropriate one. Peritoneal and Hemodialysis are the common types of dialysis to facilitate the improvement of life quality for patients with kidney infections (Brown and Wilkie, 2016). Although both of them help in removing toxins from the bloodstream, the procedures are conducted differently. The victims for both procedures are trained to conduct the dialysis at home. However, peritoneal dialysis patients are more self-sufficient than Hemodialysis patients, who have to depend on the clinicians for assistance. Hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis are effective strategies to treat kidney complications that have both similarities and variations in procedures, nursing management, and potential complications.
Hemodialysis involves the use of an artificial membrane in removing extra wastes and fluids from the blood. According to Wong, Ravani, Oliver, Holroyd-Leduc, Venturato, Garg, and Quinn (2018), clinicians connect the patients to a dialyzer using tubes that are connected to the blood vessels. For this reason, the doctor has to set a site to facilitate the flow of blood in and out of the body. On the flip side, peritoneal dialysis involves the use of the abdominal lining cavity to remove wastes from the body. The procedure consist of the use of dialysate fluid and a catheter that is placed in the abdomen. The process of doing the peritoneal dialysis is called an exchange that is complete within four hours. The patients are vulnerable to hernia and, thus, should not lift heavy objects. Also, the victims can develop fluid restrictions because they conduct the dialysis on a daily basis.
Hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis have some similarities in nursing management and diagnosis. For instance, the involved procedures in both methods help patients with kidney complications in cleansing wastes from their bloodstream (Wong et al., 2018). The victims follow similar diets to regain essential nutrients and improve the quality of life. Peritoneal patients follow a low-calorie diet that is low in sodium because they do the dialysis every day. Besides, both hemodialysis and peritoneal procedures are conducted in a clean environment. In both instances, patients can set schedules to conduct dialysis procedures at home.
To conclude, Hemodialysis and peritoneal have both differences and similarities in treating kidney failure. They help in removing and filtering wastes and extra fluids from the body. In both instances, the clinicians have to conduct the procedures in a clean environment. Also, the patients maintain similar diets to replenish crucial nutrients and improve their quality of life. While Hemodialysis patients rely on technicians for the procedures, peritoneal dialysis patients have the autonomy and schedule flexibility to do the dialysis at home. However, both procedures are beneficial in treating kidney complications.
