1. Describe the difference between research-based practices and evidence-based practice
Technically, research-based practices are the scientific process that refines and validates existing knowledge and come up with new knowledge that is able to influence either indirectly or directly. On the other hand, the evidence-based practice involves the best evidence available when it comes to guiding decision making in the clinical sector. Basically, research-based practices involve scientific inquiry and systematic in answering research questions which are so specific or even provide a test for hypothesis using rigorous methods and hypothesis. The research practice includes activities that involve, exploration, discovery, and investigation, for the research practice to be complete, understanding of the philosophy of science should be the foundation. Additionally, for the research practices to be considered valid and reliable, the researcher should be able to incorporate scientific methods in sequential and orderly steps(A, 2010). The first step in the research-based practice involves compelling question on focus to a given phenomenon with the first phase of investigation involving comprehensive and systematic review of literature to answer the questions raised. Basically, the final essential step in research-based practices is the publication of the result of the study, with a proper description on how the body of knowledge was contributed to the results.
Unlike research-based practice, evidence Based Research Practice is not all about proving validation to the existing knowledge or coming up with new knowledge. Its technically about evidence being translated and making its application when it comes to clinical decision making. The objective of evidence-based research practice is to apply the best evidence at disposal in patient- care decision making. The Large difference is seen in the EBP from the research-based practice in that, EBP includes clinical expertise and it goes beyond the research use(Houser & Oman, 2010).
2. Describe an example of best practice evidence you select from week one assignments below .discuss whether this evidence reflects the scientific or intuitive knowledge and rationale.
An example of the best practice evidence is the evidence based medicine which is the approach to medical practice in which decision when it comes to the use of diagnostic, preventive and therapeutic measures, which are taken in reference to the evidence available of their safety and efficacy. Basically, it applies the judicious and explicit application of current best evidence when it comes to making decisions about the care of individual patients. Actually, a practice of evidence-based medicine includes clinical thinking and professionalism accumulated as a result of clinical experience. An example is the one that describes the potential benefits of discontinuing the routine practice of listening to the bowels sounds of patients who have undergone abdominal surgery. Actually, the author was able to come out with a literature review with a great assessment conducted on the current practices. Technically, the evidence reflected scientific knowledge rationale, since the author was able to give a proper report on some of the clinical parameters such as first postoperative bowel movement and the return flatus played a great help than the bowel sounds in identifying the back return of gastrointestinal mobility after abdominal surgery.
Question 3
Reflecting on your own practice have you seen the best practice example you selected implemented. If so how?
Basically, the potential benefits of discontinuing the routine of listening to bowels sounds of patients who have undergone elective abdominal surgery as a practice, have been implemented in most cases to patients who have gone through elective abdominal surgery. I have seen the practice being implemented and it worked effectively. Actually, with the long-term observation, I realized that the evidence-based practice resulted in saving nursing time without imposing negative patient outcomes. The major concerns of nurses majorly concentrated on the validity of the process of diagnosis, to which level is the possibility of therapeutic techniques is able to affect the patient, to which level is there any adverse risk to the patient and the prognosis of the treatment. Immediately the decision is put to work about the provision of a certain treatment, the implementation of treatment is usually made. Additionally, the practice helped in saving and generally improving the care process and the outcomes, in everyday clinical nursing activities, EBP provides nurses with a tool through which they are able to provide a much safer health care ever possible (Standing, 2010).
Question 4
Describe a method that you might implement to raise awareness of this best practice among your colleagues.
Technically, awareness can be raised by this best practice among my colleague, through creating training programs that are able to share and facilitate learning among the colleague about new ideas that can be easily implemented in the health sector. Actually, through training of colleagues and other staff members, awareness has been easily driven through instilling knowledge and making those who have the knowledge, spread to other members in a chain reaction; training is one of the most effective ways of creating awareness. Additionally, pilot testing can be used to create awareness through, allowing identifying and working out any problems in the recommended processes and practices at the very early stage. This will create awareness and further refine the program to fit the hospital better before doing the entire launch. The pilot test will also attract the colleagues to learn new ideas and even participate in the process. Notably, communication can also work much better, since feedback and different response can be quickly achieved from the colleagues especially through the word of mouth. This is an effective and the most appropriate manner of creating awareness to others colleagues.
Question 5
Discuss how magnet status is reflected in evidenced-based nursing practice and if / how your chosen topic would be impacted.
Basically, magnet status is an award that is given by the American Nurses credentialing center which is one of the affiliate of American Nurses Association to any hospital that is able to perform to the satisfaction of set criteria which is engendered in the measuring of quality and strength of nursing. Through the implementation of evidence-based and the proving by the clinical nurse that the implemented evidence was generally adequate and was so important and essential for a particular patient and even proving that the intervention was successful in its implementation, magnet status is reflected in evidenced based nursing practice, since it provides a reflection of excellent patient outcomes, with nurses gaining higher level of job satisfaction with a low staff turnover rate. Technically, a reflection is expressed when the high rating is achieved by nursing involvement when it comes to the decision making in patient delivery and decision making. Critically, magnet nursing leaders value staff nurses, have a serious commitment and involvement when it comes to shaping research-based nursing practices and even reward and encourage them for making great advancement in nursing practice (Huston, 2013).
