What is the article about?
The diverse population article focuses on ethnicity determining how racial discrimination affects the physiological well-being of people. Racial discrimination is the concept where a specific race undermines others based on their origin. According to the diverse population article, some of the most significant impacts of racial discrimination are drug and substance abuse, low self-esteem, and mental illness, such as anxiety. Racial discrimination is most common in social places, such as schools, churches, malls, and stadiums (Forrest-Bank et al., 2018). Moreover, the study mainly focuses on native Americans, African Americans, Asians, and Hispanics.
The diverse population study involved 210 participants. The participants were from various ethnic groups in the United States of America. Furthermore, the article's hypothesis was to determine if there was a significant relationship between microaggression and ethnic identity. Through a path analysis, it was found that ethnic identity is positively related to microaggression. Despite racial discrimination having a negative impact, it also contributed to people developing a strong cultural identity (Forrest-Bank et al., 2018). An appropriate example explaining this aspect is when a black American is looked down upon by native Americans. This aspect makes the black Americans prouder of their culture.
How does the chosen article relate to working with a diverse population?
The study focused on the impact of racial discrimination on various ethnic groups: African Americans, Native Americans, Asians, and Latinos. Among the 210 participants, Asians were 31.3%, African Americans were 33.5%, native Americans were 0.5%, and 3.22% were Hispanics (Forrest-Bank et al., 2018). The number of African Americans in the study was slightly high, which was based on high racial discrimination cases among the ethnic group. However, all the races in the United States of America were included, and their response was used in the result analysis.
Another aspect that shows that the diversity population article worked with a diverse population is through the age variation of the participants—the age of respondents aged between 18-35 years. There were 23.74% male participants, while the females were 63.8%. In most cases, the youths are the primary victims of racial discrimination; hence the study's main target audience (Forrest-Bank et al., 2018). Additionally, the study focused on both genders, which was in the ratio of 2:1.
Various student learning outcomes that the article addresses
Through the article, students can understand a significant relationship between racial discrimination and physiological well-being. Many youths in the United States of America who abuse drugs are victims of racial discrimination. Through racial discrimination, victims lose their self-esteem a concept which results in drug abuse. The drugs act as stimulants making the youths forget the racial discrimination challenge they face daily (Forrest-Bank et al., 2018). The article also makes students understand that racial discrimination is a form of non-physical body attack with adverse mental impacts.
Personal opinion regarding the article
Racial discrimination is significant among youths aged between 18-35 years. The article discusses how racial discrimination has a mental impact. However, I cannot shy away from the fact that despite the article discussing the effects of racial discrimination, it fails to address the degree of the impacts, for example, on mental illnesses. The study does not also explain whether racial discrimination is the only cause of mental illnesses. I feel the study discussed essential outcomes of ratio discrimination on various ethnic groups.
