The ability to recognize, express, construe, manage, and apply emotions effectively to make plausible decisions is known as emotional intelligence (Kotsou et al., 2019). The concept of EI has demonstrated to positively impact on the psychology, relationships, and work/academic performance of nurses. Spano-Szekely (2016) argued that empathizing with others is significant as it demonstrates emotional strength and not a weakness on the side of a nurse. It also permits a nurse to relate with patients and their families on a basic human level and opens an avenue for mutual respect, and comprehension between nurses who might have diverging opinions (Spano-Szekely et al., 2016).
Spano-Szekely et al., (2016) argument apply firmly to the discussion, whereby the knowledge of EI by one of the nurse opened a door for mutual respect and understanding with the nurse who sounded exasperated and distressed that the visitors wanted five people at the bedside with their deceased father, whilst the policy only permits for two visitors for the end of life (Spano-Szekely et al., 2016). However, as a staff nurse, I informed the nurse on the importance of displaying the utmost respect and understanding to the family members, and that the purported policy was not imposed by any physician, but it is hospital policy. He ultimately consented that they could have three at the bedside when he was passing the other two could end up to the unit.
Prexerakos (2018) reckoned that EI is an important tool for nurse leaders, and contributes conclusively to the accomplishment of effective management in healthcare. Emotional intelligence decisively contributes to active patient-centered care (Prezerakos, 2018). Furthermore, employing an assertive mode of communication goes a long way towards gaining respect without being aggressive or too passive (Prezerakos, 2018). Emotionally intelligent nurses know how to disseminate their views and needs implicitly while still maintaining mutual respect for others. This reasoning also applies firmly in the discussion whereby, as a nurse, I spoke with a lot of assertiveness, and informed the nurse that the alleged policy was not made by the doctor but by the hospital, and since the physician had allowed the son in law of the patient that they could have as many visitors as they could, there was no apparent decision not to allow five people at the bedside. As a nurse with firm training on emotional intelligence, I directly passed my views without disrespecting any of the staff nurses, and disclosed to the nurse the plan, he calmed down at that moment and told the visitors to call the other household members right before the patient succumbed.
