My employer is very impressed by my Gemba walk observations and the project ideas I developed after conducting the walk. In fact, the employer noted that the Gemba walk was an eye-opener for the employer to understand the existing relationships between employees at the elderly care center and the relationship between the employees and the senior citizens. The employer also noted that the project ideas I developed after the walk are important in enhancing the existing relationships between employees as well as enhancing the relationship between employees and senior citizens. The elderly care center manager had a meeting with my supervisor to discuss the importance of implementing the proposed short term executable project ideas. My supervisor asked me to champion the two short term executable project ideas by planning a team-building activity before the end of the first half of the year. The supervisor also asked me to establish a list of local but reputable consultants who can handle training on emergency handling so that the manager can vet and select one of the consultants to periodically come train all the center employees on emergency handling. From the turn of events at the center, I can authoritatively say that my employer is responding positively to my Gemba walk observations and project ideas.
Review of my experiences during the Gemba walk
During my Gemba walk, I left my normal working tasks in the Elderly care center and decided to be on the ground, trying to establish the status of the care center and caregivers in delivering quality care to the senior citizens. I walked around the center, interacting with the care center employees and some of the Senior citizens. I confirm that the employees and the senior citizens all looked happy and satisfied with what everyone was doing. There was a sense of satisfaction in service delivery as the elderly people admitted at the center looked happy with how they are served in the center. Communication between employees was open and could see employees freely consulting and assisting each other in handing different tasks an indication of a high level of teamwork. It was a fulfilling experience, and I established that the center had developed a high-quality infrastructure that enabled the provision of high-quality care, and the employees offered quality care the senior citizens.
What internal and external data sources have you identified?
In establishing the status of the care center and caregivers in delivering quality care to the senior citizens, internal sources of data include the Elderly center supervisor, the employees, and the senior citizens in the center. The use of information collected at the care center can also be used to further understand the status of the care center and caregivers in delivering quality care to senior citizens (Mozley, 2017). External sources of data to establishing the status of the care center and caregivers in delivering quality care to the senior citizens can be obtained from the senior citizen family members and the elderly care regulatory authorities in the state.
What successes and challenges have you encountered in accessing data?
At the Elderly care center, I was able to get all information I required from the supervisor, the employees, and the senior citizens. Generally, all people were cooperative and freely shared information. Confidentiality of critical information is key (Kagitcibasi and Ataca, 2015). Only confidential information about the senior citizens was not given to me. However, I was able to observe and listen to different people to make my informed deduction. Accessing the family members for the senior citizens was challenging since the care center considered that information to be private and mot shared with third parties. Similarly was getting information about the care center from the local state authorities in charge of elderly care. The authorities insisted that it cannot offer such information to third parties.
How did the data help to narrow down to a viable, short-term executable project?
The data I collected from the elderly care center supervisor, employees, and senior citizens and from my observation at the care center, it is evident that the center has developed a high-quality infrastructure that enabled the provision of high-quality care. Similarly, employees offer high-quality care to senior citizens. Since the quality of care is already established to be high, maintaining the high-quality care required teamwork and training on how to handle emergencies in the center.
What other challenges are you encountering?
After the Gemba walk, the supervisor tasked me with developing a team-building event and establishing local consultants to train on emergency handling. The challenges I encounter is how to create a team-building event that shall meet the purpose of enhancing teamwork among all employees in the center. Secondly, it is not an easy task to establish local consultants to train on emergency handling since some are not listed in the local telephone directory.
What are you doing to work around the challenges?
In addressing the first challenge of creating a team building event that shall meet the purpose of enhancing teamwork among all employees in the center, I have decided to form a small committee to assist me in developing the team building venue and activities. Involving all stakeholders is important in attaining be the best solution (Pino, Boulay, Jouen and Rigaud, 2015). I have also called for a meeting for everyone to give own contribution to what to be included in the team building event. On the consultants, I will make an advertisement in the local magazine, and all the applicants will be shortlisted and forwarded to the manager for vetting and approval.
