Question 1: Epithelial Tissues
Describe the various functions of epithelial tissue. In your post, describe the multiple morphologies (shapes) and structures of epithelial tissue. Provide an example of an organ in the human body that has an epithelial tissue.
The epithelial tissue covers the underlying tissues hence protects them from abrasion and invasion from pathogens as well as from water loss. It further helps in absorption and secretion of substances (Shier, Butler and Lewis, 2017). These are usually made of one layered cells. Epithelial tissues come in multiple structures and shapes which include columnar, cuboidal epithelium, and the squamous ones. Example of a human body organ which has epithelial tissues is male urethra which consists of stratified columnar epithelia that helps in secretion.
What is the cause of acne vulgaris? If your teenage son had a case of acne vulgaris, what treatments would you recommend?
Acne vulgaris results from oil glands producing sebum which is an oily liquid which carries dead skin to skin surface through follicle skin. Treatment of acne for a teenager can be over the counter cleansers and creams. Additionally, the prescription of antibiotics can also be regarded as a possible cure.
Question 2: Muscle Tissues (Skeletal, Smooth and Cradiac)
There are three types of muscle tissues; skeletal, smooth, and cardiac. What are the functions of each of these muscle types?
Skeletal muscles work through contraction and relaxation by responding to messages sent voluntarily from the nervous system. The movement and attaching of bones aid involuntary movement and control flow of fluids along tissue walls whereas smooth muscles have a role in helping organs to expand and relax as required (Shier, Butler and Lewis, 2017). On the other hand, the cardiac muscle aid in the heart pumping action and withstanding the pressure involved.
What are the similarities and differences between the structure and function of skeletal, smooth, and cardiac muscles?
Smooth muscles move involuntarily and conversely, the skeletal muscles move as a result of voluntary movement. On the other hand, cardiac muscles differ with skeletal and smooth muscles in that they are only found in the heart.
Provide examples of organs that contain smooth muscle, skeletal muscle, and cardiac muscle.
The Smooth muscles are found in places such as stomach, lungs, and intestines. On the other hand, the skeletal muscles are always attached to the skeleton. Lastly, the heart is the only example of an organ that has cardiac muscles.
A 65-year-old man went to the local emergency room complaining of tightness in his chest, shortness of breath and heartburn. He is diagnosed with myocardial infarction.
What are the causes of a myocardial infarction?
Myocardial infarctions are mostly brought about by bad cholesterol, saturated fats or trans-fat.
How does it affect heart tissue?
There occurs a loudening of plaque which causes the arteries to be blocked or narrow hence decrease or stopping of blood flow.
Does the affected heart tissue recover? What is the long-term consequence?
Recovery depends on particular habits of the affected individual. Avoiding habits that caused this condition is an important step towards recovery. Prolonged consequences of myocardial infarction is death.
What lifestyle changes do you recommend to avoid a myocardial infarction?
To avoid myocardial infarction, one must avoid smoking, be active because inactivity leads to build up of fats in the body and consume food that is cholesterol free or of low cholesterol (Shier, Butler and Lewis, 2017).
