Oaks, C. A. (2016). Delusional Disorder and Gender. Sage.
According to Oaks jealousy is a delusional disorder, jealousy has the potential of affecting individual relationships at work, home, and overall social lives. Jealousy is an abrupt mental positioning in which an individual feels insecure and threatened by another person who seeks a relationship with someone they are emotionally related such as a lover, friend or family member. Oaks maintains that jealousy impact and effect on someone life is less than other psychotic disorder such as schizophrenia. Oaks notes that there is a gender difference in the jealous type of psychotic disorder in that jealous affects genders differently. Jealous occurs more often in males than females; jealous people tend to be sad which according to Oaks a maladaptive behavior to avoid further loss is. Oaks notes that understanding jealousy is the only approach through which successful treatment can be administered. Jealousy as a delusional disorder is a hypersensitive condition responding to perceived threat to a relationship. However, Oaks notes that individuals with hypersensitive jealousy can misunderstand innocent cues mistaking them with partner infidelity. The primary risk of hypersensitive jealousy in a relationship is that such individuals according to Oak can push their partners out of a relationship. Also, focusing too much on partner infidelity can affect routine functioning and practices that were previously normal in a relationship. Jealous individuals according to Oak are always monitoring their partner's behavior. This might occur as constant and routine calls asking them of their whereabouts and being hesitant to let their partners go out alone. Oaks notes that the primary cause of jealous is normal and its due to human perception and investment in the long term romantic relationships which makes them think that they will have much to lose in case of a partner infidelity.
Zandbergen, D. L., & Brown, S. G. (2015). Culture and gender differences in romantic jealousy. Personality and Individual Differences, 72, 122-127.
Zandbergen & Brown holds that jealousy is more a gender problem that a cultural problem. Jealousy is significantly affected by the past experience of infidelity in a past relationship. Zandbergen & Brown notes that jealousy is mostly experienced in romantic relationships, women are more jealous in an emotional and not a sexual relationship whereas men, on the other hand, are more jealous in a sexual relationship. According to Zandbergen & Brown jealousy has a causal effect on infidelity, social media, self-esteem, and commitment. The author also notes that failure to spend more time together between people in the sexual and emotional relationship can be a trigger of jealousy behavior. Zandbergen & Brown maintain there is the need for future research targeting on intrasexual and intersexual differences in jealousy which can help understand jealousy better as a delusional behavior. The authors note that social media plays a significant role in causing modern technology based insecurities that are the cause of failure of many relationships.
D'Souza, R. (2015). Jealousy in relationships.
According to D`Souza jealousy is a normal delusional behavior experienced by people with emotional and sexual relationships. D`Souza notes that both genders are affected by jealousy although the level of jealousy varies from one individual to another and from one relationship to another. In relationships, jealousy is caused by the fear of losing a loved one to a potential partner. According to D`Souza jealousy is a natural thing that happens when one believes that their partner has the tendency of being promiscuous. However, D`Souza holds that there is more tendency of experiencing sexual jealousy in cases when an individual has experienced promiscuity before in another relationship. Many people according to D`Souza think that jealousy relationships are healthy because it serves to remind a partner how important their lover is and continuously makes an effort to make them happy. In this case, jealousy can motivate an individual to be a better companion in a relationship and also can create a spark for an individual to be protective of their lover from external threats especially when it is possible for companions to communicate in case of jealousy feelings. However, D`Souza notes that jealousy has a destructive side in relationships and causes people in relationship to feel imprisoned in the relationship.
Results and discussions
It can be argued that jealousy is a delusional behavior that is caused by falsely perceived cues of a partner promiscuity (Coltheart, 2015). Jealousy affects both the males and females although the level of jealousy and its tendency vary regarding gender and the relationship. In emotional relationships, women are more jealous whereas regarding sexual relationships men tend to be more jealous which can, in turn, destroy or build relationships depending on how the couples will handle it. Lovers who talk about their insecurity and are given assurance regarding their partner trust can form more productive bonds with their loved ones in a relationship. Jealousy can only be minimized by engaging in open communication and increasing the time spent together when it comes to romantic couples.
In conclusion, jealousy is caused by natural feelings of being overprotective and having delusional thoughts of one`s partner being promiscuous. Jealousy can serve to strengthen and make a relationship more enjoyable, or it can destroy a relationship and cause irreconcilable differences especially when a person in a relationship has previously experienced cheating in a relationship.
