Introduction

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the new coronavirus is a recently established coronavirus associated with COVID-19 illness (Hill, 2020). Its origins are traced back in late December 2019, where several patients were initially diagnosed with pneumonia that doctors could not tell its etiology. They were epidemiologically associated with the wet animal wholesale market and seafood in Wuhan. Nevertheless, initial reports forecasted an onset of a likely coronavirus pandemic (Hill, 2020). The spread of the virus has been rapid across countries such as the UK.

Individuals with underlying medical, including chronic respiratory diseases, diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease, and cancer, and older persons are reported as most likely to experience a severe illness (Hill, 2020). The above-identified groups are said to be at risk of death. Several symptoms are identified as depicting the onset of COVID-19, including tiredness, temperature exceeding 37.8o C, and dry cough (Novel, 2020). People may exhibit sore throat, myalgia, shortness of breath, and very few individuals will report nausea, diarrhea, or experience of a runny nose (Hill, 2020).

Prevention

Prevention of the spread of COVID-19 includes ensuring that all people know the virus and understand how transmission occurs. The WHO recommends regular wash of hands with water and soap or clean them using an alcohol-based hand rub, cover the nose or mouth while sneezing or coughing, and avoiding touching areas such as the nose, face, eyes, and mouth. People need to keep at least two meters distance apart, staying at home when one feels unwell and stopping habits such as smoking and all activities associated with lung irritation (Hill, 2020). People are expected to observe professional and government guidance and stay away from large groups of individuals or avoid unnecessary travel.

Conclusion

Treatment or vaccine for COVID-19 is yet to be established, although numerous trials are being performed to evaluate potential trails. Patients diagnosed with mild presentation are unlikely to require hospitalization, although clinical symptoms and signs are likely to worsen as a result of progression to symptoms the lower respiratory tract, especially during the second week of the disease. Consequently, patients should be monitored closely to establish any shifts in oxygen saturations, vital signs, blood pressure, respiratory rate, pulse, shifts in blood glucose levels, and consciousness.
