Every technology user wants to have a device that is easy to use with features that support a myriad of applications and functions. Therefore, before purchasing a device, users compare and contrast features and make their decisions depending on what they intend to use the gadgets for. Recently, both Microsoft and Apple launched two different devices that users may want to compare before purchasing. In 2017, Apple launched the iPad Pro, while Microsoft launched the Microsoft Surface Pro in 2019. This paper compares and contrasts these two devices in terms of their design, storage, display, camera, hardware, and software.
Design
The Microsoft Surface Pro and the iPad Pro are both tablets, but the Surface Pro has a Type cover attached as an extra feature. The iPad has a premium metal surface with round corners and edges and has a Touch ID on the front under the screen. At the back, it has the Apple logo in the middle (Grabham 2). As with other Apple devices, the rear camera is positioned on the top-left side. On the other hand, the Surface Pro has a similar metal cover with rounded edges, but it has a built-in USB-C port, a kickstand, a Micro SD, and a surface connect port just like all the other Microsoft devices (Grabham 2). The Surface Pro weighs 544g exclusive of the type cover. It is 245x175mm wide and 8.3mm thick. The iPad Pro, on the other hand, is 251x174mmwide and weighs about 485g depending on the model and design (Grabham3). While the iPad comes in different colors such as black, silver, gold, and grey, the Surface Pro is only available in black.
Display
Both the iPad and Surface Pro have larger display sizes than the designs that came before them. The Surface Pro was upgraded to a 10.5-inch display from the 10-inch screen of previous devices (Nations 2). The iPad Pro has a 10.2-inch display compared to the terminal device, which had a 9.7-inch display that Apple used for numerous generations. Both devices also have touchscreens that can be used with the Surface Pen or the Apple Pencil, respectively (Nations 2). The iPad comes with a retina display with an LED-backlit screen with a 2,160x 1,620 resolution and a pixel density of 264ppi. On the contrary, the Surface Pro has a 1,920x1,280 resolution, which is lower than that of the iPad Pro (Nations 2). It also has a 3:2 aspect ratio.
Storage and Price
The Surface Pro comes in 4GB RAM 64GB MMC storage and 8GB RAM and 128GB of SSD storage. The iPad Pro is available in 32 and 128-GB storage capacities. These features are the same as the predecessor devices (Grabham 6). The iPad has the same embedded M10 coprocessor and A10 fusion chip as previous versions, while the Surface Pro has added the core M3 feature to its range as well as a newer version of the former device. This feature uses an upgraded Intel Pentium Gold Processor (Grabham 6). Both the iPad and Surface Pro have stereo speakers, and they both have about 10 hours of battery life. With these features, the iPad Pro costs about $899 compared with the Surface Pro, which costs about $1.299 (Nations 4).
Conclusion
Choosing whether to purchase the Surface Pro or the iPad pro primarily depends on the potential use of the device. If one wants a device to operate as a laptop, the Surface Pro has an additional smart keyboard convenient. The device runs desktop and Windows software and provides more options for configuration. On the other hand, if one is looking for a device that is more portable than a tablet, then the iPad offers the best experience at a lower price. It is has a smart keyboard that is optimized for mobile.
