The core competencies in public health are the required levels of knowledge and skills basic for professional practices. The skills and altitudes ensure high levels of competency and professionalism in the field. The cores help create good interpersonal working relationships and multi-jurisdictional teams for facilitating the exchange of information and knowledge within the profession. The core competencies include eight sub-branches. The cores ensure high personal behavior levels to help in organizational growth and professional competency.
Public health science skills are one of the critical competencies. Public health science skill is a branch of public health that deals with the disease prevention and control of infectious diseases. It enhances the longevity of life by providing adequate measures to help curb the spread of diseases. The branch serves as the building block of public health as it equips learners with sufficient knowledge of the common conditions and available control measures. It also provides learners with the laws and regulations regarding public health policies.
Policy development/ program skill is another branch of the core competence in public health. This field helps learners to be able to develop solutions to an emerging issue. It also helps develop research skills necessary to analyze research data and evaluate public health matters. The field plays a significant role in public health students to equip them with all the skills required for problem-solving. The core's central role is to facilitate community development programs and the implementation of organizational plans.
Communication skill is part of the core competencies in public health. Communication skill is a branch of public health that helps identify the study population and interpersonal relationships with the target society. It enables public health students to interact with people correctly, which shows high professionalism levels (Arnold & Boggs, 2019). It helps them to be able to hold talks with the people of society adequately through writing and oral communication.
Cultural competency skills are essential in public health as they help describe the diversity of people based on language, culture, gender, religion, and geographical areas. The skills help explain the effects of diversity on health programs, the implantation of public health policies, and community projects. It also allows learners to advance their social skills and undertake community programs with confidence without racism or tribalism.
Leadership and system thinking skills are significant core competencies in the public health profession. This skill is of crucial importance as it helps incorporate codes of ethics into the public health profession. The knowledge of leadership skills helps improve interactional skills between colleagues as well as society members.
Financial planning and management skills play a crucial role in public health. The skills help in structuring and organization of governmental health programs to help the citizens. These skills help develop the budget necessary to carry a public health problem and manage the available resources.
Analytical/ assessment skills are used in public health to identify community factors affecting health services provision in terms of education, income, and education levels. The skill helps in the collection of quantitative and qualitative data on matters affecting public health. The final core competence skill in public health in the community dimensions is the skill that helps describe governmental and non-governmental organizations' programs and services.
The uses of core competencies in public health include the following; One, they help enhance the required knowledge and skills of the health care practitioners. The cores ensure that institutions produce graduates equipped with the necessary skills in the field, thus competitive in the job market. Secondly, the core competencies help develop and create clear job descriptions and job performance indicators of the staff to effectively manage employees (Agha, Alrubaiee & Jamhour, 2012). The cores help in cooperating public health work layouts, essential programs, organizational strategies, and institutional planning. It ensures that the provision of services in the public health departments runs smoothly to enhance quality health services. Thirdly, they consider the cultural and institutional motives necessary for the right learning environment for public health students (Birt, & 2018). Fourth, the cores play a central role in ensuring all the tools necessary for public health professionals' training help learners access all the study materials. Fifth, the core competencies bring together the senior leaders in the public health bodies to tackle all the arising issues within the department focused on providing quality health care.
The core competence skills are the primary pillars of public health. They facilitate the process of student education, graduation requirements, and the employment of the professions, and the performance of health-related tasks. The cores have many areas of strength, such as creating the public health policy to guide the training and provision of public health services. Secondly, core competence helps in the community development and provision of health services to ensure high-quality healthcare provisions (Theisen & Sandau, 2013). Thirdly the core competencies are universally adopted to ensure uniformity in the public health sector. The core competencies' weakness is the restriction of public health services, which delays the provision of benefits to society's less fortunate. Secondly, the senior leaders have all the powers to facilitate the provision of the core competencies; thus, they are subject to biases
