One of the current issues is the use of hydroxychloroquine in the treatment of COVID-19. The issue of the treatment of the drug went viral after some tests had been done, which indicated that the drug reduced the effects of the COVID-19 virus. However, President Trump went on to announce that hydroxychloroquine is the treatment for COVID-19 and is actually using it himself. I think he was very wrong since this is not what the Food and Drug Administration announced. As one of the CNN reporters earlier reported, the drug was only to be used in reducing the severe condition of COVID-19.
Furthermore, the drug is to be used only within the hospital environment and not outside, as Trump is claiming. Trump claims that he did a survey, and non-Trump fans did those discouraging using drugs based on dangers. The apparent bias here's that President Trump is using the situation for political concerns.
The bias in this issue is the anchoring bias since President Trump's arguments are based on what he heard and did not take time to find a piece of in-depth evidence on the effectiveness of using hydroxychloroquine. The National Institute of Health planned on researching a wide range of drugs to see if they can be altered to treat the COVID-19. The trial needs data from a large randomized and controlled clinical trial on the drugs to determine viability.
The Food and Drug Administration as not approved any therapeutics to be used in the treatment of COVID-19. The hydroxychloroquine has only been approved by the FDA to treat malaria and autoimmune diseases. There is only a suggestion that a combination of hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin may benefit people with COVID-19 (Dale, 2020). This does not prove that the drug is to be used in the treatment of the virus, as Trump claims. The COVID-19 victims who were given the medication were under the ACTG study named A5395 (Dale, 2020). This was, therefore, a study and not an actual treatment being given to the people.
The FDA also issued a safety caution against the use of hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine by health professionals. This was based on the fact that the risk factors associated with the use of the drug had not been identified. Specifically, they restricted the use of the drug for outpatient services. The reason is that the drugs have been known to cause abnormal heart rhythms, such as QT intervals prolongation (FDA, 2020). It also may cause a dangerous increased heart rate in the ventricular tachycardia. Therefore, the claims of President Trump are baseless and thus biased.
