Introduction
Recent investigations by the CDC highlight that bacteria cause Salmonella Newport infections. As Thomson International, Inc., was distributing onions to restaurants, retail stores, and wholesalers across the District of Columbia, they might have been soiled by the bacteria (CDC, 2020). The list of food that was contaminated includes chicken salads, sandwiches, and tacos, to mention the least. The food was contaminated because it was made from red, yellow, sweet yellow, and white onion types. According to Greene et al. (2008), contamination could have happened as a result of the commingling of different types of onions through a large quantity; this could amplify bacterial growth.
People who were affected by the incident include children younger than five years, the elderly aged 65 and above, and people with weak immune systems. These people were disease-ridden when they consumed food sold in stores across 12 states and the District of Colombia, which was made from recalled onions. An additional of 244 people reported the symptoms since the last update on 31st July 2020, bringing the total number to 640 (CDC, 2020). Some of the symptoms that might have led to the identification of a Salmonella Newport comprise fever, stomach cramps, and diarrhea. 85 people exposed were hospitalized, and there was no mortality.
How can you avoid exposure to the organism that caused the outbreak?
- Avoid eating raw/barely cooked food
- Refrigerate your food properly
- Avoid eating Sandwiches that could be made from contaminated bacteria
- Always get the latest news from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) (Brazier, 2020).
Symptoms associated with Salmonella Newport
Most people infected by Salmonella Newport develop symptoms such as diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps (Brazier, 2020). CDC (2020) asserts that the illness lasts for a period of 4 to 7 days. For most people, they usually recover without treatment. To other people, the symptoms become severe, something that makes them be hospitalized.
