The Health Belief Model (HBM) is one of the most favored theories useful in implementing interventions aimed at behavior change in the public health sector because of its various benefits. One of the benefits associated with the HBM is that it is straightforward and thus is appealing to healthcare professionals (Orise, 2019). This is because it is comprised of constructs that can be easily understood and implemented in healthcare practice.
All the constructs of the HBM appeal to healthcare personnel because they are directly related to health behaviors and can be used to persuade people to adopt the desired healthy practices (Sharma, 2016). For instance, through the perceived benefits construct, a healthcare professional can discuss with the patient the health benefits associated with the adoption of particular health behavior (Goran & Sothern, 2016; Montano & Spitzer, 2020). This makes an individual to be easily convinced to practice the desired action.
Moreover, the HBM is favored in public health practice because there is a vast literature that supports its effectiveness in behavior change (Jones, Smith, & Llewellyn, 2014). Various health behavior changes have been realized using HBM. For example, it has been used to successfully implement physical exercise intervention in overweight and obese individuals (McArthur et al., 2018). The HBM has also been shown to help in attaining smoking cessation among male smokers (Shin & Cho, 2017). Lastly, the HBM has been confirmed to be a useful model for increasing vegetable and fruit intake among food pantry individuals (Wright et al., 2019).
Have you ever worked with it before in the field?
